Also added blueridgespeed's bit about the cardboard and painting.

Wow, I guess I have lost track of this thread and haven't seen some of the replies. Thanks for publishing it Steve.

Blueridgespeed, thanks for the tip on the cardboard. I'm going to try this. I was hoping the painted ends would be just a little better, maybe your method will do it!

Linda,
Yea a straight line is just by trial and error when putting on the painters tape. Just as the others have said, just lay down the thin painters tape and stand back. Look at it from several angles and make sure it looks straight and how you want it. I must have changed it 15 times before I got it where I wanted it.

As far as taking away value from the car... I would say if your car still has the original trim and/or holes, I would try to stay with it. However there are a lot of roadsters that have had the rear fender seams filled in or the wrong trim on it, like my car. This is a great option without a lot of cost.

This is a great pay-it-forward thread! I had to go through about $100 worth of different trim brands before I found the Cowles model but it was worth it.

Cheers

Thanks for taking one for the team James! Or should I say 100. I did the trim and badge delete from my car as I wanted the clean look and filled in the rear trim indent. I must say this trim is growing on me, and I may need to try some to see how it looks. There would be no way I could run the stock trim now.

I have the exact type of trim on my 69 that you replaced. This is great. I'm planning a paint job and I wanted to get rid of that old trim with the rubber and go to a stock trim. Hard to find stock trim in decent shape for a reasonable price so this looks like a great alternative. And if I ever find some stock trim in good shape and I "can afford it" I can do it. :D :D :D

Great write up.... I found (after a somewhat less than perfect install on one car) that what made it really easy for me...was applying a strip of wood Moulding as my guide was great. As I found that (even with a guide strip of painters tape) I had a tendency to waver a bit. To waver with this stuff is problematic as the adhesive is serious. Since there is a bit of a curve to the line you can lay it out nicely with the wood Moulding and be sure it looks right. Then just drop it on!

Here is an Aussie vendor. They have a Cowles product with a slightly different profile which may work OK, or they may be able to get the one you want:
