Rear end Swap that I can't find any details on....

Post by scogre »

Hey everyone. I'm still in the disassembly stage of my project. I'm looking forward to the future a little and I have been trying to figure out which rear end to use to upgrade my soon-to-be SR20DET Roadster.

So as I have been looking I have seen a couple options:
1. The RX7 Rear end like Spriso does.
2. The Ford 8 Rear end that looks bullet proof.

I have been toying with the idea of using a Jaguar Rear. Anyone know why this wouldn't work? I am wondering why I can't find anyone else that seems to have used the independent rear end?

Any suggestions on why this would be a good or bad choice? I know a lot of Ratrodders use them.
Dreaming of the day when I can drive my '69 Roadster with a SR20DET motor purring beneath the body. :)

I personally am going with the RX7. The Ford 8 inch are heavy, couldn't give the exact numbers, but probably 30 lbs or so more than the RX7. That big cast iron center section is strong, but more than necessary for an SR swap. I pondered the GM 7.8 inch but opted for the RX based on Michael building them and I didn't have to source the machine work for shortening the housing and having the axles resplined. Either way, I don't think it will be an inexpensive endeavor.

lots of irs discussions in past...but from the fab work above you can see what you would need to do as far as coil-over/control arm mounting, body mods, width, etc.

Thanks for the pics! That was awesome. I'm going to look for the discussion threads.

I think my search term was off. I'll try IRS and see what I get.

Oh, one other thing. Does anyone know if the owner likes this setup?

After all the fabrication, he better! :D
Looks great, but must have been a WHOLE lot of work.

That 240 sx looks pretty cool but complex. The Jag, with it's inboard discs and simpler suspension looks much easier.

Alvin,

You seem to be the guy with all the connections and answers, so hopefully you can help.

I am now contemplating putting a 4-link and Ford 8" rear end in my car.

Do you have any pics of someone that has done that?

see "Mods- Round 2" and "T5 trans and rear end" page links to the left.

I have the data from the weigh-in comparison, (which took a bit of tweaking because the lack of a rollbar in one car, and the normalization of the amount of gas)... and in summary:
1. the v8 added 263 lbs to the weight of the car.
2. 100 to the front, 163 to the rear.

As cool as that looks, I'm still heading for the RX Spriso End. Exh.route must be a bit of a trick on that one.
