Battery Choices

Post by dridge11 »

Looking at battery threads, most discussion was around the size. Found some group 24 options, trying to decide which one:

Leaning toward:
Bosch from Pep Boys (looks like 24-675B is the part #) - $89.99

Others:
Interstate MTP - $116.95
Intestate C24 - $98.95
Interstate I24 - $77.95
Duralast Valucraft - $69.99
Duralast Gold - $94.99

Was thinking about the Optima, but at $160-$200, just didn't seem worth it.

If you are a member of Costco, they have a very good battery and their warranty program is great.

The only issue I have with mine is that it is not quite as tall as the Group 24 (I think it may a Group 78???) so it's a challenge to use the stock battery hold down "rods" without adding some washers. The length and width are the same.

I have a battery from Costco now. Was looking online and I couldn't find any indication they did batteries based on the website. Wonder if mine could be replaced for free? I think mine is a group 25 (if that exists). Today is the first day I've ever heard of a "group" as the size of a battery.

Called over there, they do sell batteries. Group 24 is $59.99. Sounds like they MIGHT give me a replacement, except that this battery was in the car when I bought it. Maybe I'll have my wife take it over there after work one day and not mention that part and see what happens. The date of purchase is on the battery and it's not that old.

I pretty much only use Interstate batteries. Have had very good results with them for over 15 years. I use a group 51 battery in my car mainly because they are physically smaller and would have no issue cranking over a 4 cylinder engine.

I fitted a Group 51 as well. The smaller physical size looked right in the engine compartment. I purchased the plastic tray, hold down upper bracket and bolts at a local Acura dealer (1994-2000 Integra parts)

I use a Group 51R. Positive post is nearest and to the rear of the engine .
I think it's a good size for it's capacity, 9 3/8 L x 5 1/16" W x8 13/16" H

Here is a table showing the dimensions of many group numbers:

Note that an “R” following a group number indicates a battery with the same dimensions as the same group number without the R, but with reversed polarity.

I checked my battery and it's a Group 34 (not 78). It has the exact length and width dimensions as the Group 24 (10 1/4" x 6 13/16) so the stock battery frame fits perfectly but is 1" shorter (7 7/8" vs. 8/7/8). I think I paid less than $75 with tax.

I think that's the Acura battery. I was looking for that number to post here and for myself.

Got a replacement Group 24 battery from Costco....awesomely enough, the sticker on the battery indicating the battery age is 3/11. Extra fly touch. :-)

The pos and neg terminals are opposite. So a group xx would have the positive terminal on the left side, a group xx-r would have the positive on the right.

I now have the 51 R battery, which is compact as mentioned. Seems to crank well and is rated strong enough.
I was wondering if anyone is using the racing battery hold down seen on eBay for the Civic and S 2000?

I have an aftermarket hold down but it does not fit as well as I'd like.

Since I have a 67 I had the long skinny original group 53 battery in there. After going through two of them and their low cranking amps I went to the 51r. So much better, cheaper, readily available, and the stock hold down works on it. With the gear reduction starter it really cranks. Added the Honda battery tray.
