Late (Type B) steering box spline size
I know the early (Type A) box has an 11/16 36 output spline. Can someone please tell me what the size and spline count is on the later (Type B) box? Thanks, Jim

Re: Late (Type B) steering box spline size
Jim, you are correct for the early Type A spline...11/16 x 36... the LATE RCB steering shaft: (U-Joint end 0.571") 9/16" x 28 tooth spline.
I know this because I swapped the early Type A box for the later Type B RCB box, into my '67.

Oh, very cool Mike. Seems kinda tough to source the B box, pitman, idler and spacer. I’d like to try it but I doubt I’ll find sourcing it practical.23yrRebuild wrote: Thu Apr 17, 2025 8:07 pm Jim, you are correct for the early Type A spline...11/16 x 36... the LATE RCB steering shaft: (U-Joint end 0.571") 9/16" x 28 tooth spline.

Were you driving with early box then changed so that you would experience the difference? If so, how would you describe the difference?
I’m actually doing a Toyota Prius EPAS swap in mine and was asking about the spline size because ultimately I’d be transitioning to 3/4 DD and then to the Prius unit where it exits the firewall. While I’d like to try a B box I’m thinking the driving feel difference will likely be minimized with the EPAS. My main reason for all of this is for light easy steering at parking lot speed. Thanks for the info and response. Sorry, just getting back to this now. Jim

This site might be interesting or useful to you. It helped me with my install...BTW, I used my original '67 pitman arm and idler box.....no issues for me after 15,000 miles.

Oh interesting, so the pitman spline the same and pitman spline location approx the same. With that I could see where it could work well.
Yes Borgeson components can really help solve steering design needs. Expensive but top quality. I did get one of their power steering units years ago for my '61 Fairlane; and all the roadster engine bay steering components (damper, ujoints, support bearings, shaft). Great products. Thanks for the info Mike. Jim

Re: Late (Type B) steering box spline size
You bet, Jim. It looks like I forgot to answer your other questions about steering performance : "Were you driving with early box then changed so that you would experience the difference? If so, how would you describe the difference? "
I had already been driving with the early box, when I changed it out for the Type B, RCB using tips and advice from the Forum, and Tech WIKI. I noticed the improvement right away, and it was significant enough that I'm very glad I did it. I had always thought the steering with the earlier box seemed to have a "heavy / stiff" feel to it, and even more so during slow maneuvers in and out of parking spaces. I had never driven with an RCB box before. So, I just took a chance, and found the conversion was worth it.
If you're still interested in this swap, you might check the usual sources for an RCB, like Mike Young, JT, etc...
Good luck with your project !

Re: Late (Type B) steering box spline size
Sounds good. I’ll keep this in mind. I’ll also look again because I did spend a bit of time looking for a 9/16 - 28 to 3/4 DD u-joint and I didn’t see it. I didn’t spend a lot of time looking nor did I check with Borgeson but that would kinda be necessary in my case. I don’t really have engine bay room for any additional connectors or adapters.

I purchased u-joints from woodwardsteering. The size matched the z car (for rb steering) and you can get dd ends as well.
