Solex fuel return routing

Post by sfdaugherty »

I'm getting ready to install my rebuilt engine with Solex carbs. I haven't been able to locate a photo of how the factory hooked up the carbs with the late model fuel return line. I did find one photo with braided lines but was wondering if there was a way to hook it up using factory parts. I do have the elusive "T" that splits the line from the fuel pump to the two carbs.

I'm assuming the late model cars utilized the fuel return on the newer fuel tanks with the installation of Solex carbs.

There was a valve available for the solex carbs that is like the return valve on the SUs. I don't have a part number, but have seen photos of it installed.

So was the valve to prevent too much fuel returning and lowering the pressure?

Any ideas of how to plumb this or should I just block it off like the 67.5 models?

Most just plumb directly to the solexes (ala 67.5) and that is it.

DEFINITELY plug off that return line or the first time you hit the brakes you will shower the engine compartment in gas. Never a great idea//

While I haven't done it, I believe that the "service option" valve that Rallye sells could work depending on the Solex carbs that you have. Check it out:

Thanks for all the responses (PMs and phone calls included). It appears the consensus is to plug the return line. If I start having vapor lock issues, I can revisit the issue.

Plugging the return line was one of the first things we did on mine. No issues so far

You won't have any issues by plugging the return line. You will have issues if you don't, be it by trying to use the return line as intended (fuel will bypass the float bowls and just go back to the tank) or will dump raw fuel all over the engine as other people have mentioned. You can unscrew the fitting and install a threaded cap to plug it without doing any permanent damage. In 15 years of having Solex's I've never had an issue with vapor lock.

I have one of those Holley regulator before the carbs set to 3 lbs. I have a spring loaded ball valve which opens up under load and circulates the fuel back to the tank. Here is the thread.

Spyder:

Your braided plumbing was the example I found that did you the return line! Thanks for the link.

Very ingenious solution (and pretty too).

Thanks,
