5 speed transmission tail section removal?

Post by jrusso07 »

I am on my third transmission rebuild. This one was supposed to be the easy one because the only issue is the shift fork roll pin has sheared for first and second.

Issue is I cannot get the tail section off. I can get it to clear the locating pins on the center plate but at that point it won't budge. It won't even spin on the rear bearing. At this point the output shaft is hard to turn...but it turns. It appears that the splines on the output shaft won't pass through the rear bearing nor will the rear bearing release from the tail section casting.

The plastic speedo gear was chewed up, practically gone. I am wondering if fragments are stuck in the splines or in the bearing...that's the best I can come up with. I have reset the tail housing to the center plate a number of times try to clear any fragments. I also sprayed the bearing with brake cleaner and WD40. When the tail is reset to the plate, the output shaft turns easy.

I hammered the tail section for 3 hours with a 8 lb plastic dead blow hammer. I used wood blocks with heavier hammers... It just won't come off. Typically it takes about 5 to 10 hammer blows with the 8lb hammer to disengage. That was the case on the other two transmissions.

I have Scott's book and check off every instruction step twice.

Yes, I am on a transmission rebuilding spree. I had these damaged ones laying around for too long...

Any ideas on how to get this one apart?

If you have a chest style deep freeze you could try freezing it for a few hours in an effort to " shrink " the bearing.

Hold up there Joe, if you keep whacking on it, you may break her.

The bearing CANNOT go through the housing. There is a machined lip in the AL that prevents this. The bearing comes off with the case, shaft must pass through.

Suggest you push it most of the way back into place and we take look at a couple things.

Might be easier over the phone. I can give you a call shortly if you like//message or email a number. jt

Thanks to JT, the transmission is apart!

A lot of heat on the rear tail bearing and some more blows with my hammer and off she came.

Instead of using roll pins you should use coiled spring pins.
