Hi/Lo beam operation

Post by Marky510 »

Hey everyone,
I'm working on a 67 1600. Not sure if this is normal or not. With the key on engine off, head lights on...I only have hi beams. It will not ground the relay when I pull back on the stock. I can ground relay direct to chassis and the relay works perfectly. Here the weird part, when I start the car I can now get the low beams on and everything works normally. Turn off car, key on, no low beams again.

I'm 99.9999% sure that's not correct function.

Things I've checked and done:
New relay
Verified 12.6 volts in on RY wire
71 ohms thru coil windings terminals 1 and 2 (saw spec somewhere that was 150ohms max)

Soooo, any thoughts?

Thanks for reading and any input,

Mark

Can see a reason.
Do the dash lights work correctly?

check your steering column 4 mount bolts to the firewall. run a jumper wire from battery negative to bare metal somewhere on steering column then check for function. original column to firewall mount bolts had serrations to bite into painted surface on steering column. also check all ground points on turn signal switch to column mounting points.

I would check the connection at the switch. Disconnect the harness black wire with red band and ground it. If it works then that localizes it to the switch. It should work with key on or off.
66 stroker, almost done.
67 basket case, paint coming soon.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. Found the problem I'm pretty sure, need to process it a little with a glass of wine.
Whilst checking the ideas posted I noticed that I had at some point lost right hi-beam. Went to the bulb and connectors and found the pigtail in the fender well was barely pushed in. When I wiggled it the pigtail/connector fell out and landed on the tire. Plugged it in (all the way). Now I'm getting correct function of hi-lo beams in all key positions and car running or not.

Thanks again for the help,
Mark
