1600 R 16 carburetor fuel valve

What dose the return fuel valve on the # 3 and 4 cylinder rear cab do? How dose it work? can it malfunction?

It's a return valve to prevent vapor lock. It has a Reed valve inside. Yes, it can get stuck or break.

how dose a reed valve operate?

If broke or stuck what would the system's be?

In this application, it just maintains the fuel pressure at the proper level. If it sticks shut, you shouldn't see any effects as then the system will basically be what the early cars hav. If the valve breaks, or gets stuck open, then you may get fuel starvation as the return line would be free flowing.

That s what I have going on, fuel starvation after warm up. banged on it with a wrench must have unstuck, it's ok now.

This valve can with the new (rebuilt) Z cabs installed fall 2015.

It could have had a piece of trash lodged in it. Good to hear that its working now.

for sure, could have been trash, I should have replaced this gas tank years ago.

It is a thermal valve. Has a bi-metalic strip inside. When cold it is closed. When it gets hot it opens and recirculates the hot fuel back to the tank. Supposed to prevent vapor locking.
