1600 Cylinder head and machinist discussions, opinions and ridicule all accepted

Post by msampsel »

Well I decided to replace my brass seats (WYAII with the head off) with chrome molly on a 1600 head.
Seats went in okay, then exhaust valves looked thin, got new stock ones.

Now my head is held hostage for guides and seals, ordered the stock Nissan intake guides and seals and IIRC
my machinist said the head needed to be reamed with a reamer too large over and would not be done by him.
Discussed cutting down the head ledge to make to seals lie flat and he said then the inner springs would not work?

Tried to get the outer diameter of the some different intake guides from one of the vendors with no luck yet.

So machinist is planning on making his own guides or some such and looking into GM seals which are what he thought were on the head prior?

Stock Nissan exhaust valves ordered are fine.
I'm a little surprised my machinist would not cut the head off the valve stem seals and use the ones I brought him.

Thought my machinist was worthy, now not so sure. 30 years of experience with heads and some U20 head experience too I thought.
Wishing I'd stayed with the head as is ... We will see I guess might be looking for someone else to finish or rework.
I know the Racer Brown cam required stiffer than stock springs Otherwise, thought
it was stock head but this work was done by a dear friend 40 years ago so the details are foggy to me.

Sorry this is so darn long ... whining over :smt004

No encouragement or acceptance of ridicule on this board. For abuse and trash talk, see "Ratsun" :)

My guy makes or modifies his own parts (valves, guides etc) all the time. Since he (your guy) is making some of his owns stuff he should be able to modify things so you can use a variety of different seals. I think mine are just little caps, but my valve stems are smaller and the guides custom made.

Modifying for the GM seals is what my guy did. I have been happy with the results.
