Anyone replaced all of their gauges with aftermarket?

Post by marcus550 »

My SRL311 tach is broken. The new tach cable is so difficult to route, and ends up stressing the tach input due to the odd angle it runs, it broke the collar right out of the back of the tach. The little clock spring inside is now a ball of very fine wire. All of them are cloudy and look old. So, I started thinking about all new gauges from VDO or Autometer or ???

Anyone replaced all of the gauges? What fits, what challenges are there, how does it look, etc? I would love to keep it stock but that tach is HORRIBLE to install and the new cable is practically impossible to use.

My first choice is to gut it and replace the guts with that from a cheap electronic tach. Next is to maybe splice together a thinner cable, and buy a used tach. Or replace them all.

There should be a thread on replacing the guts on a late gauge.

I replaced all my gauges, but they came with a early dash.

Was that pic taken just before you got the ticket for 100 in a 55?

That was just before they put the cuffs on me. :)

Just kidding. This is not responsible in any way. I wanted to see how long I could maintain 100 @ 6000 RPM. This motor sings at 6K and keeps pulling to 7k and beyond. I really want to get it on a dyno to see where the power will drop off.

I would have guessed 'just before the engine blew', because you're not showing any oil pressure!

3rd gear?

I've got a manual gauge set up until I pull the dash and figure out what is wrong with the stock one. I'm thinking a grounding issue.
