What does this translate to?
It is on the bottom pages of the 311 parts book. I feel like I should know ;)

I pointed my phone at it, and it had a conniption. Through all the gibberish it kept putting out, the only thing that might have made sense was the bottom word could be motor oil.

Continuing that thought, I found this link: http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki ... e=Elephant

Second edit:
It does translate to Elephant Motor Oil. When translating Elephant, you normally get 象, but on the logo, エレファント is the Katakanization of the word (the process of writing a non-Japanese word with a Japanese alphabet).
(all things I learned today)

I tried using my phone this morning and Google Goggles didn't have any clues.
I thought the elephant was an oil company logo but I wasn't sure. Thanks for confirming. I know the elephant logo is on some gas oil caps too. Not sure if that was from the factory on the early year cars or other Nissans like the Patrol.
I think I'll put it on a T-shirt whenever I make some more for myself or maybe that tattoo (just kidding).

Interesting, I found this link which shows a pic that has the same "wording" on the oil fill cap

https://dailydatsun.wordpress.com/tag/elephant-oil/

From the link:
These caps weren’t used on the US models, but on the Japanese / Aussie models.
– So supposedly it text translates something to the tune of: “Please pour Elephant Oil”
– Elephant branded oil and lubricants from Nissan pre-dates the 240z.
– The elephant was used as a symbol to commemorate successes in the East African Safari Rally.

Maybe they helped fund or publish the service manuals.

Yeah I have a couple of those elephant stickers. Just didn't know the history or why it was in the 311 parts manual.

I'm rusty, but top line is "elephant" (as we seemed to have figured out), but the characters sound more like "elephanto".

The second line is more clear: "motor oil".
