Back to Basics: 1/43 1967 Fairlady SR311

Post by Alvin »

Recently a fellow member contacted me to follow up on a scale model kit he sent me to build. The kit was sent to me in 2007  As you can imagine I was a bit embarrassed as I had not built it. For the last few years of my life I didn't even think about model car building. I proceeded to locate the model with the intention of sending the kit back to its owner...basically throwing in the towel.
I opened the kit and it hit me...I really did love building these things. I mean, the 50+ cars on display in my living room remind me daily! I figured that my front yard landscaping was my Covid project, so why not take a break from that and knock this model out?

Motivation acquired. Let's build!

Image

This is a 1/43 scale resin model kit by Provence Moulage. Synonymous with quality and neat details, this is a really simple kit but super tiny to me as I am a fan of 1/24 scale kits.
Image

The windshield frame had broken off in transit (easy fix). Take a look at the neat parts included like photo-etched trim and metal wheels/bumpers. Even has the license plate trim (you thought the real thing was flimsy  )

The owner wants this model to look like the Monte Carlo version using the supplied decals. Wish me luck

Lots of opportunity for paint detail. Side trim top boot just to mention a few places for a good eye and steady hand. Interior seems to be molded to body. That will be challenging to do well as the aluminum trim will be hard to paint cleanly. What about headlight scoops, tail lights, etc.

Progress...as little as it is, I'll take it!
In search of flat black, primer and bright red spray paints I visited 7 (!) Michael's Arts & Crafts stores in my town. Not a single one had those, in fact the plastic model kit paint sections were decimated...maybe I'm not the only one building models

As much as it annoyed me I resorted to buying paint online, which took about a week to arrive.
Image

The interior is painted Tamiya Matte Black (TS-6) and the body got a coat of Tamiya Fine Surface Primer.

Next up is body paint and detail work.

With 1/24 scale I always lightly wet-sand it with 1500 grit then 6000 grit, then dry. Then polish.
This one? I will just clear and be done :)

Looks great Alvin.
How will you handle the molded details such as side trim, door panels or the interior aluminum trim? Steady hand and good eyes?

Side-trim and anything that is chrome/stainless I use Bare-Metal Foil burnished on and trimmed. Aluminum finishes I'll need to paint by brush or needle tip. The interior is really basic and not well-detailed.And it's annoyingly tiny.
