Locking Gas Cap -1967

Post by DAC21 »

I ran a search, I didn't see what I was looking for (a U2 Song in there somewhere) What are folks using for readily available AFFORDABLE locking gas caps? That $275 Nissan one on eBay with matt finish isn't in that category. Mine isn't an original, best I can tell, it does date to the early 70's. It is chrome but with no sliding keyhole cover door. Anyway it is toast so hopefully there is something aesthetically pleasing out there??

Edit: silly me, my cap is in fact original. The sliding cover was missing which threw me. I noticed the small hole where the missing cover pivots, and the lights came on. The key is frozen in the lock, maybe some PB Blaster Deep Creep will solve that. Real heavy for what it is. $115 after tax for the cover repair kit, then add re-chroming.......maybe not worth it with the $60 repo in the wind.

I am having some made but they are a couple more months from being done. The first run were not acceptable so they are remaking them. The fit and chrome were not up to my standards. If this run is acceptable I will offer them here at a discounted price of $60 shipped in the US and them make them available on Ebay and my site for the regular price.

If some one makes good gas cap repo’s for a decent price Ted will have to cut back on his driving since he’ll be spending most of his time giving demerits for improper gas cap orientation!

Brian, Bravo for undertaking the project! Just curious why you want it to look different from OEM though...

If that photo is of one of the units that didn't pass mustard, then you have something amazing on its way!

Brian,

How about a repo pop up Antenna? That has to be a moneymaker. The only thing I'm finding as NOS aftermarket is $289 on eBay. It looks identical to one I bought around 1979. Apparently it has Datsun Z applications as well. Sounds like a potentially good mover.

Wow, nice find. Has anyone used this Porsche antenna? Is the fit and finish for the Roadster no issues on the top side? Bracket tweaking, fab to be expected.

The Suzuki GT750 Gas Cap 44200-23810 is just a chrome gas cap. I feel It looks nothing like the Datsun one except that it is chrome. Yes it's better than nothing but again...don't get too excited about it.

What is exciting about it is that it doesn’t cost $ 275.....but that is just me.... :D

It has a passing similarity to the 1970 gas cap that nobody likes either

Readily available from numerous vendors a few years back (haven't checked lately), these aftermarket locking caps for many models of late 60s Hondas were close. Weld a bung from one of those models to your filler neck, whether '70 or pre-, and you're set. BTW, the cost of these was even less than the oem Suzuki non-locking.
