Locking Mechanism for a Gas Cap

Post by RonnyB »

Is it possible to replace just the locking mechanism of a gas cap rather than buying a new cap for $250! The lock rusted out and I had to drill it to open. It's the vented cap on a '69 2000 Roadster. Thanks for the help!

Post pictures of what you have left. Did any of the mechanism survive the unnecessary drill?

They don’t need the lock to stay on the car, you can run it as is.

Well, I don't have that style lying around. Now for the really bad news. You didn't need to drill that out. You could have opened the trunk, removed the filler neck and used a long philips screwdriver to remove the plate and locking pawl. Sorry.

I was able to remove a cylinder by drilling a small hole and pushing the little spring that holds it in. I then had it rechromed.

Take off the plate that’s held on by the 2 Phillips head screws. Remove the sliding tab, as that’s now in your way. With that removed the 2 small tabs will hold it on. The big "tab" doesn’t hold anything on, it just keeps it from turning.
