shifter removal

Good morning all! In order to remove the engine and trans in 1967 Roadster I need to remove the shifter.
Can anyone give me advice on how to remove it?

On the 5-speed, remove the shifter boot, reach down the passenger side of the transmission tail, place a 14mm box or open end wrench on the nylock attachment nut at the base of the shifter, at bottom of the transmission tail, wedge the wrench between nut and transmission tunnel, then use a 14mm open-end wrench across the flats of the shifter base to loosen the attachment nut, while holding the wrench on the attachment nut to keep the wrench from falling off until the nut is free and can be removed by hand along with the bottom bushing compression washer, then pull up on shifter to release shifter, top bushing compression washer (if installed, may not be), top bushing, and bottom bushing should fall free (or be forced off). Seems like a three-armed paper hanger act, but really not that difficult. Then think about what sort of replacement bushings you want to reinstall when the time comes -- stock, delrin or aluminum.

Thanks for your help but the 4 speed must have a different setup. There is no nut on the side of the shifter.

I know nothing about the four-speed, but to be clearer on the five-speed, the attachment nut is on the bottom of the shifter, not the side, below the tail through which it and the shifter bushings are affixed.

Attachment nut at base of part located at top left of the following photos.

You do attack the attachment nut from the side, however, above the drive shaft in the transmission tunnel, which you reach via the shifter hole in the transmission tunnel.

It is the same procedure to remove a shift rod and bushings for a 4 speed as it is for a 5 speed. Take a look at the above pictures of the 2 transmissions. There is a nylock nut and washer on the bottom side then the two bushings and the rod come out. Thew bottom bushing drops down and the top one comes out top side with the rod.

Shifter or shift lever.

'Shift rod' is more apropos of external linkage(s) that transfer(s) motion from the shift lever to transmission/transaxle, such as the linkages to a rear-mounted transaxle, though a series of cables are sometimes used instead.
