SPL episode on Wheeler Dealers now available

Post by bakerjf »

The Datsun Roadster episode is now available for streaming off the “Motortrend” App.

The car is a ‘68 SPL with a 2L transplant. Aside from Mike Brewer calling it a “‘69” throughout the episode, I thought they did a nice job with it. They highlight the Volvo brake swap, as well as rebuilding the Idler box.

Not impressed with this description.

ABOUT EPISODE 1

Mike and Ant finally get their hands on the greatest British sports cars never to have been built in Britain, a 1969 Datsun Roadster. It's handsome, fun to drive and prone to breaking down. Ant handles the steering, brakes and an engine that sounds like a lawnmower, while Mike brings a tired old soft top back to life.

During the episode you discover that the reason “it sounds like a lawnmower” is because of an exhaust leak at the header. They also go on and on about what a cool car it is, and that Datsun took all that was good about British cars and made one that was reliable.

There was nothing negative said about the Roadster at all. I understand after decades of disrespect by many “traditionalists” some of us may have (understandably) developed something of a persecution complex. However, I recommend suspending judgment until you actually watch the episode...

Looks like it's only Hagerty Drivers Club members? I have Hagerty on my Roadster but i'm not a club member ($45+).

Oh, you’re correct! Have to be a Hagerty Driver’s Club member, which I’m still not sure what that gets you besides the magazine and the Motortrend app?

I enjoy that show and am bummed I didn't see this until it had already aired, but at least I know it's out there! I have Hagerty club insurance... guess I need to see what I get in more depth!

Which MotorTrend app? There are several.
Of note is that there is a 14 day free trial mentioned on the Motortrend Car Show app
