Things get hot under the bonnet or hood for you colonial types

The scenario, a nice day and not too hot and a part to collect from my friend at the local MG shop, it comes in handy that MG copied the roadster so completely you can get all sorts of useful things from them lol. So, I'll nip down in the roadster and she was running well and only the tea time traffic spoiled things but nothing can deter me from open top motoring. Setting off from traffic lights the engine revs go through the roof and I can't get things to behave so it's kill ignition park up to investigate but as I stopped flames appeared so into the boot (trunk aliens) for fire extinguisher and the fire was put out. The first thing that springs to mind is I was not driving home so I called for help to the oldest club in the world, the AA. Cause? suspect supposedly ethanol proof fuel hose that suddenly decided it was not going to stay properly connected which caused the front carb air filter to set on fire which in turn helped the blaze and created a forced induction effect which has resulted in the inner venturi's of one of my Mikuni's actually melted and jammed the throttle open. What I need now is 2 inner venturi's for 40 PHH as it appears they are no longer available for 40's. Has anybody got what I need and would be prepared to ship to UK, I'm only relieved that only one suffered damage and so far only damage to air filters, replacements delivered 10 minutes ago, 2 Upgrade motoring insulators which are on their way and once I have venturi's I'll be up and running

and a reminder to take fire extinguisher out of boot/trunk and put in cockpit!

I've never seen anything like this happen. The fire continued long enough to that it melted the venturi!? That's crazy, and a very good thing you had an extinguisher. Glad your OK, and the car too.

No advice on the part but I can say from experience, wash that powder out of the engine bay asap. I had a little engine bay bonfire a few years back due to an electrical melt down. After towing the car back to my parents place I was so annoyed I left it for a week, coming back the following weekend to sort out the mess.
Turns out that powder is very caustic. Anything zinc/cad plated was almost ruined. Alloy parts also did not like it. The U20 rocker cover reacted, brake lines got surface rust on them and all the jubilee hose clips rusted shortly there after. It also gets in every nook and cranny so it a pain in the backside to completely remove.

I carry a halon fire extinguisher for that very reason. I once had to spray a full powered extinguisher on a VW bug that was on fire, but there was no stopping the magnesium once it got going. We cleared out and let the fire department handle it.

Mine is a Hawk, but I got it many years ago as a promotion for their extinguisher line. Small enough to fit in my glove box.

Well, she's back up and running albeit with a couple of hiccups along the way. The BMW inner venturi's while looking a bit different seem to work just fine but when I first started after fitting them tickover speed was way too high and I thought I'd hit another problem until I realised I had replaced the rose joint on the linkage and you don't have to be far out to increase speed by a lot. To be on the safe side I got a friend to check the airflow through the carb and it showed the front carb (the repaired one) was showing 9 on the meter while the undamaged one was 2.5 so a quick adjustment on the link rod and she's running sweet although the weather has prevented me from a proper road test. At least I managed to get to the only show so far this year last Sunday and of course she was the only Roadster there. Must get everything spot on as we are booked for a big retro show at the end of the month and it's a 600 mile round trip, fingers crossed lol.
