Tunnel Support Removal 4 Speed to 5 Speed, Why?

Post by Curtis »

On the 66 body I am restoring the car apparently had a 5 speed in it since they hacked up the shifter opening and the tunnel support.

I lined up the 4 speed and 5 speed next to each other and measured them. It would seem to me that it is not necessary to remove the support. Can someone please post a photo of a 67.5 tunnel or even a later cater car and tell me why they did this?

Thanks.

Makes getting the transmission in and out easier. It really doesn't give a lot of strength.

That part I know having had mine in and out several times. I never found it to be much of a problem. I jack the front of the car up.

I can certainly relate to that. Maybe I will fab one up with grooves instead of holes, weld studs onto the underside of the channel, and fasten it with wing nuts for quick removal.

So with all the 67.5 roadsters around no one can post a photo of the tunnel arch support and shifter hole?

On my site under the resto tab, the Apr 2020 (Undercoating) photos have a few of that area. Unfortunately while I had the car flipped, I didn't get the same close up or angle you have. It really does look like your photo (the brace sort of "floats" just above the tunnel right across those two threaded nut retainers. (sorry, I can't link the photo's until I get on my laptop).

I had a 67.5 once that had the transmission replaced with one out of I think an RL411. The shifter hole cut out was almost identical to that.

Thanks, I really want to scream at whoever did this to mine.

What are you using for exhaust insulators?

Curtis, Mcmaster-carr has high temp insulators. In RCMike's pic that appears to be them. There was a thread on here about them, I have the page of their catalog, but didn't reference the part#. Page 1548 will get you what you need. Pat

Damn, that's pretty underneath, and probably makes it easier when you're working underneath, i.e. the lighter red vs typical black.

Is that a JT SS exhaust system?

Kevin sourced them, I think they may have come with the complete JT exhaust..
