Arghhhh bad paint

Post by TobyMan »

After almost a year doing body work finally had car ready to be painted. Sprayed it, went on what looked like real nice. Problem is wrong paint, the paint company totally screwed up the mix. Jeff explained to me that it didn't harden or flash or anything it was supposed too. Not sure of alll the details, was crying too much to listen closely. After (heated) discussion the paint company took responsibility. Giving us new product and paying for 20 hours labor.BUT it's 40 more hours scrapping it all off with a razor blade  before painting it again. Nothing ever easy.....on the plus side love the sky blue it would be sora blue but they stopped using sora on the 67s. Same paint code....

Wow, what a huge disappoint and setback that must be. I don’t know who to feel sorrier for, you or 2mAn. Really nothing to do but grit your teeth and get back at it. When I painted mine, right off the bat I let the hose touch a fender. Had to stop, clean the gun while the paint dried and then re-sand the fender. Not near as bad as your problem, but I got a taste of what you are feeling. Sounds like at least all you’ll be out is time and labor. That had to be a very costly mistake for the paint supplier.

Sora blue was used after 67. It was used until the end of the run.

Can’t you sand off the paint? A razor blade seems slow and liable to create some scratches.
I guess a chemical strip would be harder to do
I am sure it will look nice when it is finished.
What paint are you using?

I had a problem where the paint was reacting with something due to being mixed wrong. It had tiny bubbles all over and every inch of the car and had to be wet sanded. Took a week for the paint supplier to come and see. They replaced the paint but didn't pay me for all my time since it wasn't a professional doing the work (no company to reimburse) except for spraying it. After that I was given incorrect info on when to wet sand it... the new formula hit faster and needed to be wet sanded with a day or two of spraying, not the usual week. The paint became so hard it took all day to sand a door to where the scratches would sand and then buff out. A very challenging time and one of those moments where cars teach patience... you have no Choice, even though in your head you just want to scream. Deep breaths, followed by knowing that this too shall pass...

Reason I ask if the white is paint, it looks shiny , it can react with your new paint . not much of a body tech myself , but know pro painters who will not paint over paint unless its the same color / recommended fact brand
Did you have a good filter/ dryer on the compressor. Hose ?
You must strip the. top coat of the white for adhesion and removing any silicone/ wax . paint was sprayed in the temp it says to ?

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone. This too will pass. The white is grey primer, it had been stripped down to the bare metal. Here is a pic of what the paint did. Kinda shrunk with the paint never completely drying so had to scrap thick stuff off to be able to sand. Anyway, most of car is scrapped and sanded. "Just" the fenders to go. Making progress and will overcome. Jeff tells me 3 more weeks.... I've waited 7 years so what's a few more days? Besides it's Western NY we've only had a couple days warm enough to drive so far this year. Btw The new paint guy says" in the book "sora blue was only on 67s. But as,we all know "the book" and these cars don't always agree :D

They took the bad stuff out but it still works pretty good, just takes a bit longer.

Repainting is moving forward. Wet sanding between clear coats. Fenders still to go. Making progress. :D
