68 2000 New Carbs and Intake Install

Post by halvernaz »

Hi All,

I'm getting ready to install a rebuilt set of SU's on my 68 2000. I have a complete replacement set-up including carbs, intake, linkage and heat shield.

Any recommendations/suggestions on removing my current set-up and installing my new/rebuilt set-up. Any special tools or techniques required.

Hoping for a simple trouble free install, any help would be apricated.

Thanks
Henry

Having just done this multiple times while working on my cylinder head, the worst part for me was reaching a couple of the manifold nuts that are nicely tucked behind the exhaust header tubes. I found that an open end wrench that wasn't too long worked best for me. Others may have a better way.

If I recall, the nuts for the intake and exhaust need to use a 12mm wrench instead of a 13mm due to clearance issues. Pay attention to how the spacers are located in the exhaust studs unless you have a newer thicker header flange.

Once the carb bodies are mounted on manifold I always peek into them to set both butterfly valves to sync before putting domes back on. Use the adjustment screw for each carb.

Do you have to replace the intake? So much easier if you don’t , as then don’t you have to do a new exhaust manifold gasket, I believe.
I just did the carb swap and it was easy enough.

I also replaced the manifold studs while I was in there but that might be difficult while the head is still in the car. I used Dorman 3411 studs...which fit well except a couple needed to be shortened about 1/4" as they interfered with head stud passages. These are cheap to do though if you think yours are shabby.

12mm socket with two extensions and two u-joints makes pretty short work of those pesky flange nuts

Here are some before and after shots of the manifold studs. I marked the problem-children in red.

Nissan still sells those studs BTW. The part numbers differ based on the length.

Or you can run a die down each one to clean the threads and make it easier to install the nuts in tight places.
