Tachometer Cable Replacement 68 2000

Post by halvernaz »

Hi all,

I'm getting ready to replace the tachometer cable on my 68 2000. I'd like to know if there is anything I should know/do to make the process as pain less as possible.

Thanks
Henry

I don't think you'll find it technically difficult, just a cramped space to work in! The trans section is keyed to slot in one way, the tach end is squared to fit into the gauge. I don't believe there's any reason to mess with the tach end or disconnect it there. When you slide the new cable in it should seat all the way into the trans end. Suggest a dry lube applied to the cable itself before sliding it into the casing. The hard part can be getting the trans end to thread back onto the trans as its often dirty there (oil and grit), fine threads and very little space. You can pull the new cable out of the casing a bit so you can slot it into the trans, then just slide the casing over it and screw it on. Was surprisingly resistant to threading on the last time I did this, so be patient and don't force a crossed thread!

Just make sure you have the appropriate seals at the distributor end connection. They are notorious for leaking there and running down the cable. #2,3 are very important. It’s the (other) cable Greg

The radiator on my other car holds about 10 quarts of oil, so open for your suggestions Greg
