It’s been years since I had to remove mine and I don’t remember the details...but, if I was going to do it again I would...
1st. Make an appointment with a massage therapist, you’ll need one by the time you’re finished.
2nd. Remove drivers seat— 4 easily accessible bolts and now you can have at least a little room to lay on your back.
3rd. Get an old blanket to lay on and maybe a pillow to put up against the pedals.
Optional, but recommend. Hang heavy weights from your finger tips for 72 hours before starting so they will be longer and thinner!

Just be thankful that you don't have to access the rev counter. But seriously +1 on removing the driver seat. 4 bolts and just SO much easier access.

Unscrew the speedometer cable, unscrew the odometer reset cable, remove the lightbulb, unscrew the two nuts on the U-Clamp, then push speedometer out through the front of dash.

Really - you can PUSH the speedo out the front?? Surely the 'brackets' that hold it to the dash would interfere!. And are they not typically wingnuts?

As I said earlier, it’s been awhile. I thought I remembered that there are studs on the back of the speedo that go through holes in a U-Clamp which push against the back of the dash. If I’m wrong then apologize for the erroneous info. At any rate, wether it goes out the front or the back of the dash the process is the same.

Does anyone know for sure if the speedometer comes out the front or back?

Just undo everything and pull it out from under the dash. Hardest part is reaching it.

And wear some glasses, dust and stuff will be falling on you.

Just checked - I have an open dash in the garage.

The brackets on the speedo prohibit removal through the front. Possible, perhaps, with dash removed, but impossible with dash in place. And it is secured by wing nuts, fortunately.
