What did you use to weld it? I turned my mig way down low and still had trouble. The guy fixing my floors said it was real thin metal.

Curtis, I welded in three patch panels and used up 10 square feet of 18 gauge stock on mine with my Lincoln 110.

I used gas shielded mig. Flux core is harder on thin metal and not as clean. There is no doubt that it is much more difficult to weld thin metal than thick. You have to stitch weld, which means that you shoot a tack, move to a different spot, shoot a tack, etc and keep filling in the spaces. You can find demo's on you tube if you look up "stitch welding". Also ,you can use a piece of copper (pound a small piece of copper pipe flat) as a backing plate to the weld. Use magnets or a clamp or whatever you can to hold it in place. The copper makes it a bit easier to prevent blowing through the metal, and the steel weld won't stick to it. But you still have to be careful about building up too much heat in one area.

Quick epilogue here (and not to hijack the thread). After getting these strips welded in the floor is super solid. I was jumping on them and there is no deflection.

I'm taking the second car to the body shop this weekend, I'll have an empty garage so time to clean and organize.

Went to put the plate on from the other car to tow it out on the dolly and the holes don't fit. Hmm, what's the deal. Body in back has four holes. Obviously was drilled by the dealer to mount plate.

Time for some research. The cars came from Japan with 210mm spacing for Japanese plates. Looking at Rallye he has photos of original panels and just the two holes like mine. Turns out they make an adapter so I don't have to drill new holes.

DMT, direct to metal. He laid it on good to make sure it was covered. He'll sand out the few drips.

First I like that I can look at a member's classified ad and say to myself, I don't need any of that. After years of buying and hoarding I'm down to a small number of things I need.

Second, I get my first car back from body work in a few days. Then hopefully off to paint. We'll see about that. The painter's father passed away so he is having to deal with that unfortunate event. This on top of losing his wife a couple years ago to cancer. Hold your loved ones dear.

I have had my own health issue the last 4 months which is now much better and slowed down my wire making. Now I'm getting my knee replacement in 3 weeks. So I'm not sure how I'll be able to get the paint done for a while. And we may not have the misfortune of the devastating fires here in our area but we do have the 3rd worse air in the world right now. There were fires right down the road from my car and evacuations.
