1968 inner fender splash guard

Post by TobyMan »

Looking for a picture of what the inner fender splash gaurds looked like on a 68 1600. When I removed the fenders and vacuumed the rust away they disappeared

I do not believe there is any such thing, so they did not disappear!
I have often thought about a plastic inner fender for the Roadster - something to keep the gunk out of the point where the fender, body and door sill all meet and collect and cause rust.
"When all else fails, force prevails!" Ummm, we're gonna need a bigger hammer here.

Hmmmmmm ok back to the drawing board.
Yes something to keep the gunk out where they all meet.
Working with Dann at Rallye. He is looking for used. He says he has no new used? Hopefully I was clearer when I contacted him.
Will post what he comes up with.
Thanks for the replies

Yeah I don't believe they exist (but I might be misunderstanding the item you are talking about) however there is a guy on Youtube who fabricated his own inner wheel well. I'm sure somewhere out there has the dimensions on making one. I'd jump on that build if I had the resources to fabricate and mass produce them.

Are you referring to the "A"post that the door hinges attach to?

I was referring the inner wheel well that is typical for modern cars and made of plastic.

OK, I am with you now. I put a generous bead of seam sealer between the fender flange and the A post, that I think will keep anything form being able to get in there and hold moisture.

Damn, that's a good idea, wish I would have thought of it when I switched out the front fender.

Seal seal everywhere there is a seam. The worst offender is the lower front fender behind the wheel well where fender meets inner rocker panel. I sealed top seam to fender and bottom seam to rocker. Used brush on seal sealant.

Did you do that while it was assembled, what was your process. Sounds like something that should have been done while installing the fender.

I disagree with sealing the fender to the rocker. That is the outlet for water and water laden with dust. I want the dust and water to flow through when I flush it with water. I put fairly large washers between the fender and the rocker to keep a nice open gap.

Only sealed one of my cars at the fender to rocker interface after having to rebuild the metal onthe rockers. Painted some sealanton both surfaces, assemble the fender to the car. Painted more sealant on the seams. Use a 3m sealant in a can, is thick like peanut butter, not as tasty.

I suspect TobyMan might be referring to a projecting bulb in the upper-back of the wheel well. It appears to be a stamped, thin gauge steel component, about 12"x3", positioned at an angle. On my car, they are 50-70% gone. See attached photos (w redline markup).
