1965 Datsun 1500 - Keeping it in the family
My father-in-law just gifted me his 1965 Datsun 1500. This car was originally purchased by my wifes grandmother at a Datsun dealer in Fallbrook (San Diego). Its been collecting dust the past 8 years, and i'm determined to get this family heirloom back on the road!

Looks pretty good from the pics, why was it parked?

Re: 1965 Datsun 1500 - Keeping it in the family
He was storing it for his mother, and drove it occasionally. Hasn't ran for about 8 years now.
My father-in-law suspects a piston ring to be bad, so this may require a top-end rebuild. The idea is to get it back up and running. The tuner in me wants to throw in a SR20DET, but the practical side of me says leave it alone and just drive the car how it was made.

Re: 1965 Datsun 1500 - Keeping it in the family
Looks to be in pretty good condition from what you can see in the picture. With so few 1500's left it would make more sense to keep it original. If you find yourself addicted to the Roadster experience and want a modern drivetrain then you could buy a 1600 and modify that car.
Welcome aboard!

Digging through the glove box and found the original Manual, a Nissan Maintenance book, and a Atlas. What a throwback!

Re: 1965 Datsun 1500 - Keeping it in the family
Welcome to our Roadster family, glad to merge with yours! Great story, and it looks like the road Atlas suggested some fun drives in the past. I agree with the sentiment to keep it stock since there are so few left, but understand the desire for power. I'm kinda glad the decision had already been made for me many years ago as my car was already modified body-wise when I got it, so I can't be blamed for modifying a 67 2000.
Look forward to hearing more!

Re: 1965 Datsun 1500 - Keeping it in the family
Got the 1500 up and running. Flushed all the fluids and the motor turned over pretty easily. Swapped out the fuel pump with a fuel pump from a 240z.
The brakes were locked, and took about 3 hours to break them loose, and another 5 hours to refurbish the brake lines.
To do list: electronic distributor, new starter, new flywheel, possible upgrade to disc brakes, new shocks, new leaf springs, new tires, fuel gauge not working. Basically trying to get the car reliable and safe enough to drive to the Solvang show next year.
Car got a nice wash and its looking real purdy

Re: 1965 Datsun 1500 - Keeping it in the family
We have a trunk issue fellas. The trunk doesn't open with the key. I put in the designated trunk key into the hole, and i saw one of the pins fall out. Now the key doesn't work. Does anybody have a tip where i can source a new key/lock for my trunk? 1965 1500.
Also, any recommendations how to get this open? I'm assuming going to a legit locksmith might be my best option. But again, i saw one of the pins fall out of the key hole.

Re: 1965 Datsun 1500 - Keeping it in the family
From the tech wiki
1) Get a length of straight stiff wire, (paint can handle works great).
2) Make a mark at 3 inches and 4 and a quarter inches.
3) Make a 90 degree bend at the 3 inch mark.
4) Put the wire in the passenger side tag screw hole.
5) Line the 4 inch mark up with the rear body panel.
6) Turn the wire so the angled part goes up and to the driver side, it will come to rest on the trunk latch (inside the trunk, it will be parallel to the ground).
7) Turn the wire towards the driver side which will then be pushing down on the latch, and it will pop the trunk.
Pushing down on the trunk lid helps.
I just went and did this on the 67 to make sure it would work, these are exact measurements. (Mark - Datsun 1500)E
