Made an Inexpensive Muffler

Post by Curtis »

So being thrifty as I am, I am making an inexpensive muffler. I had searched a lot for something that would be similar to the Datsun muffler. I didn't find anything I liked.

So I had to change the exhaust on my Mazda truck. After taking the resonator off I looked at it and thought gee this is almost the same. So months later here am making one. Waiting for the new resonator but here is the fit up.

If you're looking for the nice SS bling then this is not it, not even close. Especially since you get all the stuff to hang it. I almost pushed the button on the whole system but in the end settled for just the twin pipe resonator. I mean after all, the resonator is out where people need to go WOW. Not sure how long this will last but the original OEM resonator lasted 26 years.

The resonator has 2" inlet/outlet so the 1-3/4" slips right in. My total cost is $80.

Well, we'll see. I may have jumped the gun on this. The original resonator does not have any louver holes punched in it, just a little side pipe inlet. That would make this basically a straight pipe. Wait and see what the Walker resonator looks like inside. There's another alternative I can get.

It says the Walker is a tube-and-partition style interior design so should be good I hope.

I like this. What truck is the muffler off of, and is the over the axle pipe off of the same make/model?

The resonator/muffler is for a 1991 Mazda 2600. Apparently it is also for the MPV. When I get the Walker one I'll let you know if it will do the job. I had the pipe made, $40.

The mazda resonator has a bigger inlet and outlet than I want deal with. So I stumbled across this. Almost exactly the same size as the stock with a 2 inch in/out. Also comes in stainless. $66 to my door from the UK. Would be about $91 for stainless.

Why not use an adapter for any pipe that is larger? You can even use clamps for no welding if desired, or to check fitment.

Or, not... lol

Trial fit up on the frame. It helps if you put the resonator L bracket on pointing the right direction so the pipe doesn't hit going over the axle. Last time I put a twin pipe resonator on was in the mid 70's.
