Retired and back to Roadsters

Post by roadsterdude1600 »

After moving, building a shop, finally retiring (mostly), and selling my Benz, I am back to roadsters in a big way. I have had my '66 1600 (Jessie) for 42 years - some of you may know me from the old SEROC days). Now I have bought all my friend's roadster trove consisting of a running (kind of) '66 1600, a completely disassembled (but all there) '70 1600, a 67.5 1600 titled parts car, and several engines transmissions and various roadster parts. The plan is to start with re-assembling the '70 as an education then restore my '66 using the best of everything I can find, then build a DatRod with whatever is left. Several year plan here, but it should keep me busy. I have the 70 frame painted w POR 15 and am disassembling 4 front suspensions to powdercoat, and rebuild 2 for starts. get a rolling chassis and move on to rebuilding the best engine and tranny I can find out of the lot, and down the line. I will be on the forum a lot, but am seeking time/money/ego saving advice up front from those of you who have done a frame-off restoration. Point me to any good archived threads or sites outlining those sagas, advice on how to deal with vendors - since I will be spending some significant money, what is the best method of getting good discounts - who has the most complete inventory, should I stick with one vendor for everything - that kind of stuff. In the meantime, I am having a ball getting parts organized and a plan executed. Loving my new shop and buying tons of "deferred" tools. Livin' the dream,

Mike

Very cool Mike and congratulations on your retirement.

I retired almost a year ago but still waiting to run electric to my shop which is about 600 feet from the source.

First upgrading the service to 200 A - should happen in a couple of weeks. Then run the service underground to the shop, err barn...looking forward to doing some work on my three roadsters - all 2000s, all high windshields

Joe, thanks. You'll get there. Took me a year and a half to get the shop squared away. Site prep, concrete, building, electric, garage doors air compressor and piping, 2 post lift, floor...and on and on... but now that it is done it rocks. Still finishing some stuff but now working also. Sounds like you will be busy too with 3 roadsters!
