Build Dates

Post by 68DSU »

If it's here, I can't find it. How can you tell the build date of a roadster?
my vin is 19469.

I have never seen that information short of the year of manufacture by VIN. Build date would be neat. I do not think Scott Scheelers books or the Fairlady book cover that. Though I could be wrong. Not unusual. Stan, was that info ever available?

Steve,

Does your ’72 Z have the build date (month and year) stamped on a plate on the rear of the driver’s door side of the car body? My ’70 Z had “11/69”, so it was made when the 311s were still being produced.

Always seemed curious that the Zs displayed the build dates, but the 311s did not, even when the builds were concurrent. May have been a corporate decision introduced for the new Z model?

Yes, for sure my Z has a build date. Will look at it tomorrow. I think the 510's had build dates as well. No where to be found on a roadster.

I use some rough math to determine the build date of mine. Test my logic.

68-2000 VINs go from SRL311-01000 -> SRL311-07000.
That means they built 6000 models for the '68 Model Year, or 500/ month.
Model Year build cycles were from October - > September.

Therefore, my car being VIN SRL311-01228 I have it estimated to have an October 67 Build date.

Thoughts?

Geoff,

Please share the month/yr and serial nr. for your SPL. And, have you seen others in your area that have the build date displayed?

Thanks!

I'm afraid that is long gone for me. The tag not the door.

That sounds like a number problem. I'll have to ask my wife. I use a credit card because I don't do the subtraction in the checkbook properly.

A better/another way is to look at the parts on the car, as some of these have a date on them. Parts from suppliers would sit in the assembly line at Nissan for not too long, before being put on the car. Obviously, some of these will have faded away, but some could be still found, most likely in the interior.

Picture is of the tag of my wiring loom for the engine bay. 66 5. This ties nicely with what I know of CSP311 production.

This SP311 wash bottle bracket, new, if you scroll through the pictures, has a blue ink stamp. It looks like 39 10. For the likes of these, you have to use the Japanese year calendar, which is based on the years an emperor has been on the throne. With these era cars, the period is Showa, so 42 is 1967, therefore 39 is 1964.
