How to fix hood release?

Post by mraitch »

Installed backup hood release, but stock one is trashed. Anyone know how to 'fix'??

Yup, I got that, used bicycle cable on both backups.

The issue is, how to put the cable securely into the stock hood release. Welded. crimped, soldered ?? and how to remove current cable??

I don't believe that you will find a way to attach a new cable into your existing pull assembly strongly enough to withstand the pull. Google "choke cable". You will find plenty of choices, and perhaps even one where you can replace the knob in the kit with the one from your roadster.

Anybody know what size screw holds the trim and left side panel onto the lower dash on an early car?

That 69-70 cable is special. Easiest way (by far) is just source a good complete replacement.

Hmmm, thanks for the reminder Peter, will have to take a look at mine.
Being that your are a historical small motorcycle guy, I am thinking the clutch cable unit would be similar design/technique, but larger diameter cabling. (what was that bike you spoke of from way back when, a CB350 twin as I remember?)
A buddy here at wrk has found someone in Glendale area that offers, "XX dollars per hour for bike repairs, and YY dollars if you sit with me and I teach you how to do them yourself".
Their cast-off parts bin might be a good place to poke around. I'll PM you the contact info.

I see DatsunParts.com sells a complete cable for under $100.00 I just snaked my old one thru and hooked it up, only to find out it is rusted beyond use. I see lots of hood pulls for sale online for under $20.00 but they will need to be cut to fit. Has anyone used an after market cable they remember the name of, that they would recommend? This would be for Mothra a 1968.

You can open up the pull end of the cable, and then crimp/solder a new 'cut to fit' cable. So from ANY bike shop. That's what Emmy did for Eliza.

Thanks, I replaced it with a cut to fit cable, yesterday. It turned out just fine. Got it at Napa. My hood release is not visible unless you lay on your back anyway due to my custom dash. :)
