Cleaning up Aluminum parts.

Post by mraitch »

Looking for suggestions as to appropriate media for cleaning Aluminum parts - valve cover, SU carbs. etc.

What is the best medium for working on aluminum?? How does one get an awesome shine on those parts?

Any thorts, tips would be appreciated.

Depending on the oxidationon it has
From 2000 grit emery cloth to media blasting then a buffer wheel with ruge then a clear coat to keep it from turning back to a oxidized state .
Different allowys are much tougher than 1001 alum.
I gave up on my turbo z31 wheels
I have a alum speedboat 16ft many polish ,they look so kool ...might try it on

Vapor blasting. Quick, thorough, and not all that expensive.

I learned about a technique on the Metropolitan Forum that seemed to work pretty good. Use Kerosene and 0000 steel wool, then polish with Aluminum polish. Attached is a pic of my 1960 Met sill plates one before and one after.

Don't smoke while doing it :-)
