Numbers correct?

Post by cmjrgas »

I see this on classifieds for the Roadster all the time. What numbers are we talking about here?
Does the engine and tranny share numbers with the VIN? Where are these I'd plates located?

My guess is you are seeing adds for number matching cars (see many on high end auctions)...I don't think there are serial numbers to match transfer to block... They are talking about the engine that is in the car is the one that came with the car. Your block has a U20xxxx number stamped on the pass side on the flat section where the head meets the block, and the Vin plate listed the Engine number on a line after the Vin #. In some circles they have to match or value "may" take a hit, others are not so worried.

They simply mean that all the VIN tags, option codes information, engine serial, etc match the production of the car. The various VIN and serial # locations all match, etc. Rallye has a good bit of info.

Be careful about paying anything extra for a "Numbers Matching" car.

Unless they have any other Corroborating evidence like "OLD" previous owner entries into the registry or picture of the VIN that can be dated.
Also the number should be in the correct range from the registry.

The VIN plates are reproduced blank.
I have a 67.5 2L with all these things and yet because the "History" is know, Its not the "Matching" motor.
It was not sold to me as "matching" number and I will not sell it to the new owner as "Matching" number car.
