Surface rust on the body

Post by bossbob »

So, I'm in the middle of moving which will be a several month project, and haven't had any time to work on the roadster since December.

I'm home this weekend packing and organizing stuff, and noticed that the roadster is starting to oxidize in areas. I had previously stripped it down to bare metal.

The car is in a garage but I haven't treated it with anything.

What is the best course of action right now knowing that I don't have the time to address it properly.

Any kind of solution I can just spray on the metal that isn't permanent, I could spray it every several weeks if need be.

There are some metal prep products out there (like POR-15) thatdo a conversion process. I have used the POR-15 metal prep but painted within a few weeks. And it was summer.

Highly recommend NOT using an oil based product as it will be difficult to remove and will cause poor paint adhesion.

Might be best to just let it go and sand and prep before you paint.

Keeping condensation to a minimum is important but without heated storage- that’s hard to do.

Go to an auto body and paint supply house and ask them for their recommendations. They will have something easy you can apply. Whatever you do, don't just try to sand it off, as that will just imbed the rust into the metal. Anytime you go to bare metal you should apply some primer as quickly as possible. Even a light coat out of a spray can will work

Evaporust states that it can be used to prevent flash rust until you can properly treat the metal.

Thanks guys, my original plan was to start the body work, but life got in the way and wasn't able to stay on it like I planned. I'll check into evaporust for now, and ask some local guys what they recommend as well.

Definitely one of the phosphoric acid rust converters like POR-15 as jrusso said. It will convert the rust that is already there to iron phosphate which is the same black coating that that is on your impact wrench sockets. Where there is no rust it will leave a clear coating that will turn white in areas. The white will need to be removed before you continue but it will come off a lot easier than any paint or oil.
