U20 Jackshaft bearing removal tip?

Post by nismou20 »

Down to removing Jackshaft Bearings on U20. Do they drift out the front or aft? Punched out the rear oil gallery aft of shaft and trying to drift it out toward front but lots of resistance. So they only go in/out one way? Would this be better done by a machine shop to have it pressed out/ in?
Also when reinstalling new bearings how does one get the oil gallery holes nicely lined up to block? It’s hard to see them. Thanks.

If jackshaft bearings are like the 1600 cam shaft bearings I was told to let the machine shop do it. There are special tools the machinist used when I watched him do them on my car. I am sure some people do their own , of course.

Check them first to see if they even need replacing (What! I know I know...). Per my machinist, they are under very little stress and tend to not wear out. Unless they are showing clear wear, you're probably good to go if you want. Mine have always been fine. YMMV!

Oops, re-read your post, it looks like you're committed at this point...

Mine are all toast! Think at last refresh by PO they bypassed replacing them. May have been good then but these 3 are really beat up! Guess they’re pressed in. Much cavitation especially the very front one. I’m glad to be addressing them. 3 of 4 top rings were cracked on pistons also. Much to my surprise the rear main rope seal was pretty dry and guess doing its job!
So, there is a debate on soaking in oil or installing seal dry. Both my ends were dry. What is the consensus on this?

When the bearings are replaced you can have the machinist put in the cam shaft so that it is demonstrated it spins freely, assembly lube added on the 1600. My machinist did this demo. Not sure on jackshaft but an added benefit if similar.

I got an aftermarket rope seal as one that I used which was Nissan disintegrated in oil, before installation. Not saying they all do that.
Even if good and installed correctly they can still leak, per Kevin Desirello, and he should know.

The jackshaft replaces the camshaft...its just a little longer because it has 2 gears instead of one.

Very common for rebuilds not to include boiling the block which requires replacing the bearing.
