U20 engine mount bypassing Alt bracket.

Post by nismou20 »

I’m in the process of pulling the U20 and does anyone know if there is a replacement for the stock alt bracket that would fit the driver side engine mount? With the cool side GM Alt I wanted to rid the busy bracket from the driver stock location. Any affirmation to the one on passenger side possibly fitting the driver side?

As I recall, right and left are slightly different, but would work OK. On early cars that didn't have the large cast mount,
there was a spacer bracket (about 3/16" thick) between the block and mount. (it was a bracket for the exhaust manifold)

That spacer is probably necessary to center the block properly. If you have or make a spacer, I think it would be fine.

The right and left are different lengths. The easy way to identify the early driver's side mount is that it has a notch to clear the socket for the exhaust brace mounting bolt. Note that you need the metal mount and the bracket for the brace which mounts behind the mount. If you use the passenger bracket on the driver's side, the aircleaner ends up beating the inner fender.

OK....the mounts are different from one side to the other and using the same mount on both sides, even with a spacer, is problematic.
What's the solution? Just cut the "extra" stuff off the drivers side mount?

My 2 cents. This is annoying to you, but no one else will ever notice. I relocated my alternator a couple of years ago, and show my car often...no one has ever said “boo.”

I'll try to look through my stash. The driver's side is of course the tough one to find. I may have a spare - if I do, I will post.

Here are the mounts. You can see that the left side bracket with the little cut out for the manifold support is a little bigger than the right side mount.

Thanks for the inputs, must be like like hens teeth trying to find one. I will be looking out for one but if I can’t find it by time my engines ready to go in I’ll probably just cut the ends like suggested earlier.

Nah, not ALL THAT rare since every 65-67.5 1600 parted out would have provided a set.

As noted above, the LH mount is slightly (.28") longer than the RH. The plate that is sandwiched between the LH mount and the block is .18" thick.

So if you make a .5" thick plate from steel (or AL) and use that as a spacer behind a RH mount, the offset would be nearly perfect for the left - If painted the same color a the block, it would never be noticed.

Nismou if Sid has one, great, or if you want the two parts shown below, 25$ would get them, no big deal- the black is powder coat/// hope this helps j
