Thank you everyone for the advice; I was able to work with local expert Dave Premo who lives close and was able to remove the nut and diagnose the problem; MISSING SEAL, i suppose Rebello Racing forgot to reinstall one when i paid $500 for rebuild a year ago and it's been leaking like a sieve every since. A new seal from Dave Premo has been reinstalled and leak is all gone. Glad to put this one behind me- Hope to see everyone at solvang with a leak free SPL

I don't feel so dumb when even the experts make rookie mistakes.
Wish I had Premo near-by.

Yes, worked on a race car that the owner had an R16 built by a very reputable race engine shop in Seattle. It would never rev high and would eventually overheat. Took me a while before i realized they had installed the timing chain one tooth off. Kinda why I like doing as much myself as I can... only me to blame. But in this case with the trans, I would have had it done as well. Maybe they'd be willing to do a tune on your engine on their dyno to make up for it (I'm looking out for you man!).
So...
My 5 speed had gear oil running down the inside of the bell housing when unbolted from the motor. Trans has been standing up over a cookie sheet for over 48 hours. No fluid presents on the sheet. Ready to pull the clutch housing.
Thoughts?

Sounds like rear main seal, they are known to leak.

When you say "standing up" do you mean that the trans bell housing is sitting in the cookie sheet with the main shaft axis vertical (so the tail shaft is pointing up)?
If that's the case, you've pretty well established that it's not leaking from the front seal of the trans so, assuming there's oil in the trans and it's not leaking, the only other place oil can come from is the rear main seal on the engine. Of course, that's not gear oil.

Removing the clutch and flywheel will confirm wether the rear main is leaking or not. Does the leaking fluid smell different than motor oil? Trans and differential fluid have a distinct odor. It is possible that the trans front seal could only leak when warm or under pressure. Easier to check the rear main than to disassemble the trans.

Gear oil being very thick may not leak past front seal even vertical without heat and constant rotation of main shaft. But what do I know.
This makes sense. Have seal. Will replace.
