1970 exterior door handle removal

Anyone know how to remove exterior door handle, I got the nuts on the inside removed but can't get the rod to slide out. Is there a trick.

I just took mine off, there is a hair pin and barrel type keeper on the end of the rod. I used needle nose pliers to remove it, I'll have to source new ones when I re-assemble.

The rod might not have to be removed from the handle, IIRC, the opposite end just lifts off the door lock, you might be able to just remove the handle from the door, and lift the whole assembly out. I'll know for sure this weekend when I take the other door apart.
