I used a pre wash after thoroughly sanding the metal prior to filler and primer. Multiple times. The roadster metal is very dirty. Wipe wet, wipe dry. Multiple times before it was clean.
If you spray can prime, find a laquer based primer. Sands easily if you want to remove it prior to epoxy application, and will not contaminate the metal or other topcoats.
My mustang 3 sp sucked lol.
My 69 Torino GT 428 CJ 4sp was bada$$. Miss that car. Sold it in '84 :(

This is what I started with. The PO used a grinder to get this far. Besides dents and dings I had to take care of grinder gouges too. Can't see in this picture but when my dad had this car it was hit in the right back and was pushed in about 2 inches but that was another reason I knew it was my dads old car.
Like others have said this metal is not the highest quality so make sure it is clean and don't use chemicals that can get into the metal and cause expensive problem later for you.

Pebbles, that Torino must have been a lot of fun, wish I had kept all the cars that passed through my hands over the years.

Anyway, starting to think more about the side trim, and how to prep the car for paint. I'm thinking about leaving the concave groove exposed so I can add the spears later after paint vs that Protecto trim, but if I do go with the Protecto trim, I'm guessing that the adhesive needs to be on a flat surface, so I would have to fill it in before paint, if I'm correct, I'll have to decide soon. Thoughts and advise!

Another question, is in the body panels, does the groove follow the length of the car, seems like the front fenders do not have the concave groove. Is the groove only in the rear panel and doors?

Thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!

Groove is rear fender only. Not in door or front fenders

I filled over the groove in a few places while getting the surface just right. I went back after with a cut-off wheel and cut the groove back in. I don't want the groove coming back on its own in the wrong place ten years down the road.

Sadly I cant afford another BB Ford these days :( I bought a 66 Galaxie 500XL for $400. Traded it for a 65 mustang, then traded that for the Torino. I chased the Torino for years. After painting the mustang, the guy caved in :) Spent a year rebuilding the motor, and doing the body and paint with og wimbledon white w/black stripes.
If you go protecto in the future, you can level the seam with double backed tape. Dont weld or fill any of the side trim holes.
I have a recurring dream about that GT to this day. So yes, my dream car lol.

How do I go about fixing this, keep sanding, maybe a guide coat of glaze? There are several spots like this on the car.

Is this the way the grove is supposed to look. Doesn't look right to me. But after removing the bondo, this is what I have.

Tail light

Door Jam
15426585850971.jpg
I have removed all the bondo and old paint on the back half of the car, down to metal. But starting to contemplate if I need to strip the entire car ??? the reason I did the back is because the old paint was cracked and I couldn't smooth it out with just sanding. So, I'm wondering if I can leave the old paint on the rest of the panels if it's in good condition or keep up with the process of stripping the whole car.

looks pretty much right to me

BTW, there is quite a bit of lead (if original) in that area, so don't be too aggressive.

Yes the groove looks correct. Looks like you're down to the factory lead on each end, be careful about breathing the dust from the lead! I think the trim actually covers the groove vs fitting in the groove. The trims main purpose is to hide the seam between the quarter panel and the top deck. As far as the rest of the paint, if it's in good condition you can just paint over it, however it would be better if you took it to bare metal since you have no knowledge of the quality of the existing paint or prep work. If you have a decent air compressor than you can use a DA sander with some 36 grit discs to quickly remove the rest of the paint. Good luck

taking shortcuts in prep, typically is dangerous!

Just keep goin. I dont mind painting over original paint, because its known. Anything else goes in the trash.
As far as the pitting on the rear deck goes, sanding may not be enough. Media blasting the pits, till its super clean, then apply some filler. Not a fan of glaze due to its lack of strength.

Thanks guys, guess I just needed some reinforcement, I removed the hardware from the door and around the key cylinder, you can really see how deep the layers of paint are, so I'll keep going with the original plan of stripping down, at least to the original paint/primer if not bare metal.

Got a bit more done this weekend, looks like my front fender is from a 70, I kinda like the way they plugged the hole by welding a patch from the back side, but wonder if I should remove it and patch it correctly. After you guys see the pictures, you might advise me to replace the whole fender????
15432009017265.jpg
Nice screws to plug the holes, causing low spots.
15432009017014.jpg
Mirror placement under the antenna, thinking about welding this up and re-locating to the doors. Looking for your opinions on this, my first car had mirrors on the doors.
15432009016633.jpg
Can this valance be straightened out, most of it is hidden by the fender, so I don't know how concerned I should be, is it a bolt in replacement or welded in.
15432035001160.jpg
What do think about this, other than the low spot, is this savable or trash.

Again. your opinion and input matters, thanks again.

Sadly that front apron is spot welded to the main body tub. On the 66 I recently picked up when they put the body back on the frame that valance was folded back into the engine bay. It already had some bad damage. I picked up a used piece from Mike Young and drilled out the spot welds so I can remove the old and put the new one back in. FYI, the holes in the valance are different from earlier to the later cars. I believe they are larger on the later cars.
