Horn Plastic Isolator

Post by Randalla »

One of the individual parts in the steering wheel horn mechanism is a thin round plastic piece with three feet, that holds the two metal rings apart to keep them from making contact when not activated by the horn button. My car is a 67 1/2 but I believe the same part may be used on other model years (not sure which). My question is two fold, what other model years use the same part and is there a vendor who offers these parts for sale. If the parts don't exist I'm considering having them reproduced if there would be enough interest/need. Thoughts?

I was incorrect as Dean does not appear to have them but Ross does.

Steve, thanks for the response but that's a different part. The piece I'm looking for is hard plastic and has three feet that keep the plates from touching. It's possible that the part was only used on 67 1/2's but my guess is there were other years using the same part.

Do you have a picture of the broken part? Usually that rubber ring sits in there keeping the plates from touching. That is the way it is on my 67.5 stroker as well as the 67. So, not real sure what you are speaking of.

Here is a very detailed write-up nissanman did regarding the horn button. His is an earlier car but they were pretty much the same up until 67.5 1600. Horn button changed in 68.

I couldn't find one anywhere. I ended up using a plastic flexible cutting board, trimmed to size, for the base and plastic pen body pieces cut to length for the three legs. It works great!

I'm guessing that if they would hire you, the GSA could save trillions...and the military...

So, does anyone have a picture of this part? Since the parts diagram really does not detail this or the rubber ring. Thanks.

When I took delivery of mine the horn was disassembled, and since it would not pass inspection I used a piece of foam cut to size, it worked great until I got the rubber insulator.

yeah, I used that WIKI link to put mine back together. I have disassembled and reassembled many times but still get shocked when I play the horn. Resorted to taking out the fuse.

I'll be taking my horn apart tomorrow and will post a picture of the part so we're all on the same page. I have a friend who also has a 67 1/2 1600 and his car has the same part, though it's damaged and he's looking for another one.

Thanks for that. My 67.5 1600 did not have that but did have the rubber ring. I have nothing for my 67 2 liter.

My 67.5 1600 steering wheel is also very different and I have no idea where I could get info on it. I have an original Empi GT steering wheel. I will post pictures in the next day or so to see if anyone has any parts info on it.
