Too Rusty, Right?!

Post by tjp »

I assume that these spindles are too rusty to use, right? :Tosser:

So I don't have to disassemble a whole front assembly for a refresher, please verify that the two "X"s are the bearing run surfaces. And, what sits on the surface with the black square?

thanks

Yes, that is where the bearing races sit. You can probably just wire brush/polish off that surface rust- the center portion surface between the bearing races isn't really doing anything functional- just gets covered in grease. There is virtually zero chance of that spindle failing due to surface rust imho.

somewhat freckled with small pits in the race areas.

Pits where the seal runs might ooze just a little, but the bearing races wouldn't care at all-- you can always recycle it if you are unsure//

I'm at the same stage with my brakes, I would polish it with some sand paper or emery cloth and run it.

+1

The seal sleeve is a replaceable part, not part of the spindle. Not necessaary to change! Its not a pressure seal, just a grease seal.....IIRC the orginal is a felt seal.

Mostly to keep dirt and water out, not grease in.

Take a fine wire wheel to it. I taped off the spindle portion where the bearings sit and and blasted mine with crushed glass. All I really needed to do was cover up the threads. Then I put it on the Harbor Freight wire wheel.
66 stroker, almost done.
67 basket case, paint coming soon.
