Flex-Form Group Buy

Post by zetec311 »

Hello everyone,

I was trying to put together a group buy for the much talked about Flex-Form Springs. Composite Rear Mono-leaf Springs for our beloved Datsun Roadsters.

The proposed group buy was $405.00 a set of springs + shipping costs. Minimum of eight sets to be purchased over 6 months.. meaning we dont need to buy all at once. Normal lead times expected are 6 weeks.

from what I gathered from the forum:
1) springs are not a bolt on affair, some additional work maybe required for proper bushing. Some customers needed to machine/ream for the correct OEM bushings to fit.

2) Ride height is OEM, so those who want a lower stance may use lowering blocks and longer U bolts to achieve that. The blocks may need to be modified, the bolts need to be fabricated as off the shelf bolts dont quite work well.

3) Rear Shocks are reportedly not optimized for higher rates these springs can provide.. members advised a shock change is best. It would be the modified Bilstein from Lou, second the custom valve Konis that are not availible. (somebody want to arrange another group buy for those?)

The orders need not be placed together.. which is nice.
However, grouping orders can have a shipping price advantage.. somewhat, if we are clustered closer together.

I remain interested, but am on the east coast so bundling for shipping won’t be much use for the west coasters. I would be much more interested if this were a bolt-in affair. (JT68, interested in putting together a package??).

The Bilstein rear shocks I build are easily re-calibrated to the Flexforms. That work has already been done, so correct shocks are really not an issue. Forget about Koni or KYB nonstarters. There is no additional cost. - pm or email for details.

Flexform is right up the road from here, so it would not be a big deal to work out the mounting details, lowering blocks and ubolts. I’ve talked to them in the past/can give them a call.

I would prefer a “kit” over a piecemeal solution any day, yes, even paying a little more for the “known” solution.

I would be interested in the group buy on these.

If JT can work it out so it's not an everyone for themselves piecemeal situation to get all the pieces needed for assembly/install, I would be interested.

JT!!! very nice of you.

Was a bit werry of buying springs and running around town finding matching parts and a machinist too. Its seems like the most cost effective upgrade to saggy springs while getting an improvement.

I think its best to hand this off to you, agreed?

I have been waiting to buy JT shocks and have contacted Flex Form 3 times...they are right up the road in SC, but they have been VERY slow to commit to quoting and building 1 set. If you know something special for 6 sets, I would be in for a kit as well.

I talked to FF today and will buzz up there with an OEM spring assembly when we can get together.

Based on previous work it sounds like the mount flanges will need some minor machining to be a direct fit.
Since the rear bushings are different from the fronts on the roadster that has to be addressed too.
Thinking a AL lowering block kit (perhaps in 1/2" intervals) would be really slick. best, j

I'm sure that JT can put together a great kit, and having done it myself I do think this is a good way to go. The aftermarket lowering blocks do not fit the Roadster well and required modifying the top metal plates that sandwich the springs, the front mount needs to be honed to accept the stock Roadster bushing (rears are fine), and you need longer U bolts if using lowering blocks and they are not available aftermarket in Roadster dimensions (spring shop made mine in 5 minutes though). As noted, I do not believe you can go with a less expensive shock however and be fully happy... the rear was unsettled with the Gas Adjust shocks on there in hard driving, so Koni or the Bilsteins will be much better. I would be confident in what ever JT puts together. EVERY TIME I drive the car I thank him for the Bs.

I think I would be interested in a kit also. It sounds like the way to go.
