Engine hoist

Post by jarhead »

Getting ready to pull my 1600/4speed for some transmission and clutch work. Looking to pick an inexpensive hoist at harbor freight. Will a one ton suffice?

It won't have enough reach to do it comfortably. Get the two ton

Agreed. The 2 ton has a much sturdier base and has the reach needed when adjusted to 1/2 ton position.

I strongly recommend picking up the load balancer/leveler at the same time. Makes a one man job possible and the whole process much easier IMO.

Much thanks to advice on the forum and WIKI. I used a one ton hoist because a buddy let me use it. Fit the budget perfectly! It was a little tight for reach. The two ton would have been easier, but I made it work. The absolutely crucial part was the load leveler. Can’t imagine how I could have pulled it off without. Also WIKI is spot on with the need for about 2” lift under front tires to get hoist under the car.

In the end got the engine out solo, save for the end when my wife pulled the hoist back while I lifted the end of tranny to clear the grill. BTW I’m a rookie at this. Major accomplishment for me. So stoked. Off to clutch work.

Congratulations! The leveler is the bomb for sure. I hope that you took the grill out before you did this. If not, take it out before you put the engine back.

Congrats, yep, load leveler is a must.
How long did the whole thing take you?

Tough one. Done over the course of a week. Couple hours here and there. At least 8-10 hours. But could probably shave 3-4 off now that I’m familiar with the steps. That time also reflects working under jack stands, which is a major PIA.

Congratulations. Hope you hoisted a proper pint or two.

IIRC, one person posted years ago that the first time took him approx 5-6 hours. He got it down to 45 minutes with practice. I'd rather take longer and not have to remove/reinstall multiple times.

Good news, I can get mine out, start to finish in about 2-2.5 hours. Bad news, I've done it enough times that I can do it in about 2-2.5 hours by myself.
