key for newly-purchased ignition

Post by auggiemize »

Bought a new to me, used, ignition switch/assembly; as usual, no key. With a new, proper Datsun key blank, can a good, old-school, locksmith make one for me? I tagged along a thread (Diver Dave, I think..) about some folks in OZ that can make keys from a numerical code for gas caps, but it appeared there is no such number on a late (69) ignition switch. And some concerns about screwing up the face escutcheon on the switch...Thanks for any help.

I've had a local locksmith make keys to two ignitions, both the 68 and the 69. No trouble with either.

I have also had a local locksmith make a key from the ignition... 3 days after he successfully made one, I found my "lost" keys (they had been lost for 9 months).

But yes, a decent locksmith shop should be able to knock it out.
Just be happy, and have fun!

Glad to hear you got it done!

The one locksmith I found in my area that said he could do it never seemed to have the time - small job - no profit.

I had one worn out key, so I ordered some blanks, traced the old onto the new, dremel cut the new key, and had copies made at the hardware store.
