Road trip to bring back my first roadster

Post by Manu »

As some of you may know, I have found my first Roadster through this forum. I am buying Ruby off Greg, a very nicely kept 1968 1600.

Pictures below. The exterior was originally white and the interior has been completely redone in white. Other mods are the Fairlady badge on the back and the missing letters on the bonnet.

The car is located in Roseburg, Oregon and I will be driving it back to Los Angeles. My brother will be visiting in September and I thought this could be a great opportunity for a nice bonding trip. I already have booked plane tickets, we are flying to Medford on Sep. 9th where Greg will pick us up and drive us to Roseburg.

The idea is took take advantage of this trip to discover Oregon and California, drive through beautiful winding roads and overall enjoy and get to know Ruby! I am thinking of taking 3 to for 4 days for the whole trip, stopping in motels along the way.

Napa Valley, San Francisco, Carmel, some PCH are of course already on the list but all ideas are welcome! Major attractions or hidden gems we should not be missing. I would of course love to meet anyone who is up for it along the way.

I also need to build up a nice toolbag for the trip and have read through the road trip toolset thread already but feel free to add anything!

Thank you!

PS: portrait pictures seem to only show sideways, sorry

What a cool story this is and will be. I've done that drive a few times (LA to Oregon) and it is gorgeous. Looking forward to the pictures.

Thanks! I'll make sure to post pictures and updates right here.
Do you have any recommandations for the itinerary by any chance?

Let us know when you'll be passing through the San Jose area. We might be able to round up a few locals for a drive.

Note that Hwy 1 in Big Sur is closed due to a bridge replacement. You'll have to go inland for a stretch.

Sounds like a great idea Mike!
Thanks for the link, I knew some portions of Hwy1 were closed but this is really helpful.

Everything always takes longer than you think it will with traveling. So for a 3-4 day trip you won't be able to waste too much time. Your brother, being from France has less opportunities it would seem to see CA. So here is one itinerary: Drive down I5 to Williams, cut across to reach the Napa Valley. Continue heading west to reach the 101 and cross the Golden Gate bridge, then go across the Bay bridge to continue down the 5 until you reach the road for Yosemite, cut across to reach the far side and head down the highway thru Bishop etc taking the "back way" home. Sorry don't have the highway numbers.
If you have AAA you can get a free book on sights to see in No Cal etc.
Getting up very early always lets you travel faster if you can do it.
Lots of itinerary possibilities! Good to hear what others recommend for the time you have.

Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

you might want to consider running down the coast to Fort Bragg then cutting inland to Williams.

Thanks Peter I'll look into this.

Regarding tools and parts to bring along, where would you guys recommend buying the throttle return springs, belt etc?

Belt you can get anywhere. Not sure about springs. I am currently on a camping trip and just drove hw128 up to hw1. I was WISHING I WAS IN A ROADSTER! I would definitely recommend going down the coast and if you get as far as Santa Cruze stop by and say hi!

As far as spares. Having an extra fule pump + filter and extra coil/points/condenser (unless it's EI) is good. Definitely bring oil/water/brake fluid too.
Oil a little low? Time to get a longer dipstick:)

Air up the spare. Enjoy.
