Finally got her fired up and running again after engine reinstall. Lots to fix from sitting. Freed up rear brake. Timing set. Carbs synched. Thanks WIKI.

Assessing the SIll panels for rust.
I thought that one time I saw some vendor had sheet metal panel replacements for the front of the sil panels. Where of the detritus (schumtz) that the wheels sling inside the fenders to cause them to rust out?

After cleaning the current panels with a wire brush - the front of the sills are trashed.
I just want to get some stamped panels to splice in>

Does anyone know where I can get the panels.

Cam, I don't know what you are referring to as "sill panels" I don't think that the term has been used here before and your pic wouldn't open. I think that you may be referring to the rocker panel front end extensions. If they are very ba the rear ones are probably also bad. I found none available to purchase. Here is what I did:

rt.rocker ext.JPG

The only part that has to be pretty is at the very back where it meets the the rocker panel.

I think that someone in Australia is making the part you are looking for, as well as the whole rocker. Unfortunately, I can not recall the name. Perhaps someone else here will. His parts, however were quite costly and shipping would be expensive as well. Many here have been able to splice in metal in order to save their's. A restoration shop could probably make new ones for you if you can't locate a donor.

YEP - THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE TO REPLACE !!

Did you use some type of form or just brute force the bend in the sheet
metal ? Was it 18 gauge and elector galvanized ?

That was the material I was told would be the best match to the Jap.

I thought that I better attend to the loose spare tire in my trunk before I go to LGGPR next weekend. The stock T-bolt that goes through the jack base and holds the spare down is about 2 inches to short to fit my 195/60/14 tire. I decided that I could lengthen it by cutting it in half and welding in an extension. I found a bolt with a shoulder just barely long enough to work, but reall wanted a little extra length. I decided that if I ground down the head of the bolt instead of cutting it off and left a few of threads on the other end, which would be filled in by weld anyway, I would have what I needed. I need to get a little more aggressive file and take out a few grinding marks, but for now it will fill the bill.
PS. Still looking for the rubber that goes on the top of the T-bolt if anybody has an extra.

It looks like new! Did you weld it with the magnet on it? That doesn't work for me.

Nice solution, and nice work for such a small part. Well done!

Yes, mig welded while on the magnet, it made it easier to get to. I have heard that the magnets will affect the welding process, but I had no issues. Maybe it worked ok because it's basically just a series of short bursts.

Finally installed my rear bumper with over-riders that I had re-chromed some time ago. Also added a chrome tip to the stock exhaust, just to finish it off; it also extended the exhaust a few inches to help keep the new chrome from being tarnished from the exhaust.

Cam,

Responding to your email here as this could help others. I actually did very little "beating into shape" Do you have metal bending/folding pliers? I purchased a pair with a three inch wide jaw that I used lot. I would cut the edge that I need to fold at intervals equal to the jaw width and bend it in increments as you can see from the pics. I started the bends with the pliers then put the piece in the vise and finished with a hammer. You will also need a flanging tool at the back end of the piece to accommodate the rocker panel. I made mine from a pair of vise grips and then modified it further to go around the curve. lots of fun.

Today I reinstalled my seat belts, shoulder harnesses, and luggage straps. I'll post something in a seatbelt thread about the belt acquisition experience. I now have a little more confidence and peace of mind while driving.
