Keyless ignition

Post by dbrick »

I'm going to be rewiring the entire car with an aftermarket harness. I was thinking if I can find a kit with an RFID/proximity key, that would be cool. This is the system newer cars have, where as long as the fob is in the car, such as in your pocket, the push to start button works, get "x" feet from the car, it shuts down.
Anyone have any info on these, I'm not really up on the newer stuff out there. Any help appreciated.

You are over thinking it. Put a toggle switch under the dash for power and a push button for starter. Dad's car has a push button start, when the lighter is in the socket=power, push the button. pull the lighter, car shuts off.

The new cars do not shut off when you walk away, they just will not restart once they shut down. Must be a liability thing...

Mark's lighter idea would work. Just tie a string from the lighter to your belt loop so when get out of the car it automatically pops out and shuts the car off.

The other way is a magnetic reed switch, or another hidden button to give a momentary pulse to activate a relay. You loop the power back into the relay coil through a diode and it holds until you cut power. Push to start is another set of relays and some diodes, push for accessory, push and hold for 2 seconds to start. The trick is to make everything in the system so if it fails, you use an ignition key switch hidden up under the dash
The cool factor of just getting in the car and hit the button is what I was going for.

I've been looking at a few different ones myself. I'll be doing a complete painless wiring kit. 14 circuit micro fuse set-up. The ones you describe, proximity fob etc, aren't cheap, just over 4 bills. But man the cool factor....

don't forget to push the gas pedal a few times, pull the choke, and pump again!

I have a red Engine Start button in my Japanese 2 Liter Roadster. The novelty wears off after a few days.

Hey Dave,

I've always been interested in the Isis multiplex system. I'm sure it is well suited for a push button start.

SU's so far, no accelerator pump, and unless it's stone cold, I usually don't need the choke :D

The ISIS is cool, but for a car this simple is way too expensive. It might be great for a tricked out modern car.

dave it's funny you mention this because we are driving a friend's Toyota RAV4 and it has that key fob with proximity thingy. cool stuff with the starter button, walking up and touching the handle to unlock, etc. The key fob almost got us into trouble once. We gave the Toyota to some relatives but we didn't realize the key fob was still on us! The relatives got to their destination, but if they had stopped the engine along the way there would be no way to start it!

(sorry, just to tempting, and they scare the crap outta me too. I met too many face-to-face on the back dock of restaurants during my bartender days way back when)

Seems like a nice feature to add to the Datsun... also reminds me to get some copies made of my key.

Fergus, you really need to have these hallucinations checked into. Who ever heard of key fobs ambushing people on loading docks?
Beside, according to Alvin, their little legs are too short to pump the gas pedal, so I'll get Solex carbs, just in case.
