Inaugural Shakedown Cruise-long

Post by Linda »

I did a shakedown cruise today. I call it that because it is the first extended run in my car of both city and highway miles. I did around 100 miles. I've been doing around town driving for quite awhile.
I finally got the charging issue fixed. That was quite a saga and I might post separately on what I discovered about charging problems, alternators, VRs etc.

After checking out the Calabasas, CA weekly Sun morn car show I drove thru Topanga Canyon, Hwy 27, 2 lane downhill twisty road, brakes worked. Check.
Then a moderate speed cruise thru Malibu, did not see Jay. :(
Next cruising along Pacific Coast Hwy the obligatory stop at Neptune's Net at the far end of Malibu, up the coast, and it was packed with motorcyclists, beachgoers, etc. Great parking so everyone stops and hangs out for a bit. PCH at this point is awesome with nice easy driving and the ocean was flat and beautiful.Moving along at 50-55.
Turning off at the Pt Mugu Naval air station turnoff, I felt the need, the need for speed. So with "Danger Zone" playing in my head because I only have an AM radio, I moved up to 60 for extended periods to see how everything would hold together. It seemed like the engine revs pretty high compared to modern cars, but the temp was great at about 160-70 and oil pressure maintained well. Then onto the freeway for the drive back to my starting point. Not wanting to go over 60 this trip I was amazed at how cars can zoom around you. Going up a long steep hill the car got warmer but only slightly and then cooled down as I came down the other side.
All in all a great drive and I think you'll agree, long overdue.
Still many things to do on the car but a milestone for sure!

Linda, do you have the 7 blade or 4 blade fan? Reason I ask, I think the 7 blade actually screws up the airflow at high speed. Also, the scoop helps alot. What was the ambient temperature?

I have the 4 blade fan and spacer from Dean, also his 160 thermostat. I also have the nifty mechanical temp sender and guage from Summitt going into the top radiator hose, so temp is accurate I believe. I am happy to have the car run at 160-170. It runs there even around town. I had had the radiator rodded out a while back, and it is a 3 row.
The Valley temp was around 90 today, Malibu is always cooler, may 80-85 today. It gets foggy there if it is really hot here.

Robin and I put about 800 miles on the white one over the weekend. New set of plugs and cables and she was off on a jolly drive today. 3500/3800rpm and 70/80mph with plenty of power left. who's passing who? or is it whom?

Well I know she will do at least 75...but im never in that big of a hurry, to go that fast all the time...YET. My go fast is my BMW K1200 GT motorcycle. She will do 80 MPH in third gear without redlining. And guess what... I still have three more gears to go. 8) Wish I could have made it to Shed. Hope you all had a good time without me.

Not sure what that bar looked like, Mitch. Could have been on the Universal back lot for all I know.
The ocean is still the same though :)

Except it's on the wrong side!!! I kept thinking I was going south all the way to Monterrey. By the time I got my bearings, I WAS going south, back to Solvang! By then I realized I was in a Kia, and got really depressed.
