Low windshield replacement

Post by Samson »

Hey everyone, so since my intro post I have grabbed a second low windshield car, 67 this time. I think between my two cars I have 90% of what I need to be happy, but I am going to need a windshield. I have been hunting down posts and links, and it looks like I'm screwed. The glass in my 66 has one small crack but the Frame is trashed. Does anyone have a line on someone who supplies them , or used to and might have one? Thanks in advance.

FYI, I tried them but had no luck for a low windshield.

From your post, it looks like your problem is with the FRAME and not the glass. Is this correct? If so, can you have the frame repaired? I have a high windshield car but I've had to do a lot of welding and grinding on many areas of it, and it is all doable with some time and patience.

Yep his frame is job number one. Just wouldn't be prudent IMO to put a piece of glass back in with a crack when he tracks down a clean frame.

Yeah, I run a powder and ceramic coating shop , and my father and law has a welding shop two bays down, so if I felt like it I could repair it. It seems like sourcing the glass is going to be a huge hurdle. My glass isn't shattered, it goes from the frame and loops back on its self, you could cover it with your hand. The problem is if I were either to repair or replace the frame, I would not be able to get the glass out and reuse it as a the cracked part would separate from the rest.

Does anyone have a step by step on windshield replacement, specifically on how to remove frame from windshield?

I just now ordered a tinted low windshield with the blue shade from Metro Parts Market. Came in at $650 delivered to my office. Will be going into my '66 1600.

I have done several searches and not come up with any steps/ tips on reassembling a rechreomed low windshield frame with new rubber and a new windshield. Any advice? Do it yourself or take it in to the pro?

Thanks!

Did you buy your weatherstripping from Dean @ https://datsunparts.com/ ? I believe he provides instructions for install into the frame. I think it boils down to being able to accurately measure and have a sharp knife to cut 45-degree angles + correct adhesive. Add new stainless hardware and clean threads for frame re-assembly. This is a DIY for sure. I did it MANY years ago but being a cheap 20 y/o dummy reusing the orig. weatherstripping the rubber had shrunk, and it didn't come together in the corners. But it was pretty easy.

If Dean didn't include the instructions, email the shop. It says on the site for this part to ask about instructions.

Edit: I just checked one of my boxes of goodies from Dean. I bought the same weatherstripping and in addition the bottom weatherstrip that goes between the body and the bottom of the windshield frame. Both pieces were sealed in plastic with instructions.

Metro Parts Market was a failure. Horrible communications, but I did get a refund after opening a dispute on PayPal.

Sanders Repro Glass on the other hand was a great experience. The tinted low windshield for my 66 1600 was delivered for $420, including FedEx ground to Largo Florida.
