Motor Idenification

Post by mtv1960 »

Hi to all Roadster heads. I just purchased a 68 2000 on ebay and i am concerned that the motor is not a 2000 cc but a 1600cc. Any way i can ascertain that this is a 2000? I was told that the motor was replaced by the previous owner. I its a 5 speed. 311-10064 do not have the motor number yet.

That is an R16 not a U20. Valve cover is an obvious giveaway.

I suppose it could be an H20 with an R16 head but it is definitely not a U20 engine.
If it's an H20, it would be 2000 cc or it could be a stoked R16 to give 2000cc's. Either way, it's R16 based and not the U20 OHC engine.
Easy give aways are the water fill tower on the front of the head and the R16 finned valve cover.

A u20 is an overhead cam engine while the 1600 is an overhead valve engine. I think the eBay listing may have been posted here. I seem to remember seeing that listing with no reference to wether the car was a 1600 or a 2000 other than the listed vin number. Since the car clearly displayed 2000 emblems I suspect the owner was either ignorant of the car or was deceptive in his add. Also possible that this is not the car I saw. Generally speaking a 1600 is worth a few thousand dollars less then a 2000

If what you bought was listed as a Datsun Roadster 2000 or U20 then it was a fraudulent sale. You should put in a claim and get your money back.

This is one of those places where the exact description will matter.
If the seller said the engine is a U20 you have a claim.
If however, he said it's 2000 cc it could be an H20 or stroked R16 and would still be a 2000cc engine.
AFAIK, the only way to tell for certain is to measure the stroke which means pulling the head or by volume.

The VIN number is for the car Theunz is refering

The add never claimed it had the 2liter engine just that it was an SRL which it is, all that being said he paid 5K for the car which is not a bad price given condition IMO

Yup. Purchased an SRL with a 1600 engine transplant.
Seems like a nice car for the money.

Definitely not the car I was referring to. Listed as a 2000 in the add with a SRL vin. Seller points out that the PO reported an engine swap at the bottom of his listing. My ignorance or fraud statement still applies. Could be either. Up to you to decide if you still want the car. If it were me and I was still happy with the car then I would seek some monetary compensation. Couldn't hurt. Seller may agree or just decide to realist with proper information.

The features, plus the S/N, would indicate that it's a '69

As a side note - that's great they kept the 5-speed since most would want the 5-speed.

If I were you I would just ask if the R16 is a 1.6 or has been stroked (I highly doubt it is bc the price is fair for a base R16 SRL conversion). But doesn't hurt to ask.
