garage heater

Post by jarhead »

Looking to get a heater for my two car garage. Any suggestions? Given the lack of space I would prefer a wall or ceiling mounted.

I use one of these. Not wall or ceiling mounted but portable. So I store it in the summer. My Garage is 28’x32’

There is a 200000 BTU version too

This is what I've been using for about 15 years. It may take up more room than you want, but offers some advantages over a portable. I bought a used high efficiency 80 or 90 thousand BTU downdraft residential furnace off Craigslist for about $150. The base is just a plywood box with an opening on top to accommodate the outflow of air from the furnace with a large grate on the front. If you will look to the left of the sink you can see the thermostat next to the hand cleaner dispenser. Behind the wall that the thermostat is mounted on is my water heater, this is where I tapped in for my gas for the furnace, also the water for my sink. For electricity I just spliced on a heavy duty cord with a 15 amp plug. Underneath the welding helmet is an inexpensive flat filter that covers the air intake. The jug on the floor catches all the condensation that the furnace produces. All in I have about $200 invested. My garage is roughly 36x36 and I can bring it up to 65 degrees on a 30 degree day in 20 or 30 minutes. Once it reaches 65 it doesn't cycle all that often. This is a very convenient system, just flip a switch when you want heat, and you don't worry about running out of fuel. Now you may have noticed that it is not properly vented like it should be. I have run the furnace for 8 to 10 hours on many occasions without noticing any odors or ill effects, but then I have been caught running with scissors as well!
Sorry about the sideways picture, I don't know how to fix it.

I am extremely happy with my non-vented catalytic propane unit in my "shop" here in NH. My shop is 40x50 with 17 ft ceiling. I keep it at around 45 degrees in the winter unless I need to work on a large sized short term project. The heater is in my "inner" room which is 16x22 with 10ft ceiling. 95% of my work is done in there. I keep the inner room at around 50 degrees, and bump it up to 60 when I go in. The heat that escapes the inner room is what keeps the rest of the building at 40-45 degrees. I have been using that heater for 13 years now and here in chilly NH it costs me only round $400.00/year.

I use a 12,000 BTU mini split a/c with heat pump. My shop is a 20x24 metal building. I can heat it up to 75 in winter and cool to 70 in summer. Small unit hanging on the wall and the rest is outside. No lost floor space.

Wish I had room to do what theunz did. Maybe the next garage.

I use a single 1500 watt 220V Cadet wall heater. Takes 2 hours or more to bring temp from 50 to 60 in my slightly oversized single bay garage.

I have a Dayton ceiling-mount natural gas heater in my garage, vented up through the roof. Works very well. I keep the garage at a minimum of 52 on the thermostat year round. Don't know the BTUs off hand, but it can get the garage (~1100 sq ft) from 52 to 65 in maybe 15 minutes.

I have a Modine Hot Dawg 30,000 BTU gas fired heater. The unit is awesome and heats my 20 x 24 garage easily. I keep the thermostat set at 54 degrees in live in New England. The heater cost pennies a month on my home natural gas bill. I would highly recommend this unit, retails around $500.00
