Negative Battery Cable Repro - Working At It

Post by Curtis »

Some of you may have seen the cable I made to replicate the original multi-wire ground cable. I ordered some lugs and right angle battery terminals. The battery terminal is open on the side so would have to fill it in and file or find a different one.

Making some progress but I'll need a bigger size lug for the wires to all fit. I opened this one up to fit the wires. It was soldered shut. I can get a crimper to crimp them but it is $150 so I'm not excited to just buy it for one or two cables. Easiest is to just solder the end and make sure the solder doesn't creep up the wire. Got a solder pot but I need some flux to make it work right.

I use one of these. Much cheaper.

Be nice if one could source some wire with the yellow stripe.

Yellow stripe is just paint so I will be using a paint pen to put on a stripe. I could get the wire but I have to order a thousand feet minimum and all they do is paint it.

Curtis, you might try a local boat supply store. I purhased the correct size heavy duty lug at a local West Marine Boat supply store and they also had a three foot long handled cripper tool and did the crimpping for free. I was out the door in ten minutes and it cost me $4 for a lug 2-pack.

Here is what I used from West Marine: https://www.westmarine.com/buy/ancor--h ... cordNum=17

1,000 feet! Doesn't sound too bad. I mean, you only need to make and sell 400 harnesses and then you're good to go!

After much searching I have found large open barrel terminals. One is almost a perfect match to the original but they are out of stock and I'm waiting for that one. Found some others to try out.

Plodding along on this. I got an military spec negative terminal. OEM positive on the left.

Got a big crimper to do the open barrel terminal. Not as wide as the original though. Need someone with a milling machine to make me a new set of jaws. Drafted it up, looking for someone to make it

If it has a yellow stripe, surely one would be too afraid to install it - lol

Okay, I'm getting some movement on this. Working at getting a new set of crimping jaws to duplicate the wide Japanese crimp.

Also looking like I will be able to get the Yazaki battery cable that they make these out of. They don't ship to the U.S. but they do ship to Taiwan and my friend is helping me with trying to get it. Going to get the larger positive cable as well. It only comes in 50 and 100 meter rolls so I think I'll have more than enough for a while.

Also going to make a jig for striping the yellow on it.

If I can get the 50 meter coils I can make over 100 negative cables and 35 positive.

i got my router bit today and tried it on a piece of wood so I can slip the wire in to a groove and keep it straight. Looks about the same as the original. Two coats of oil based paint pen.
